What ever happened to the Reinhardt Toyota family member who was on here a while back? I thought I remembered him offering club pricing on parts. Haven't heard from him in a while.

Unless they have stopped Lowe Toyota (Onur) offered free shipping on all small parts.

Billy? I'm FB friends with him. But I wouldn't count on a discount through him. He's an awesome guy, but it's kind of "stick with what you know".

No more free shipping (as of August 1st). Sorry. Just not sustainable for the higher ups.

Them higher ups have zero clue what they have in y'all... AND us! We support y'all!

There were a few problems with the H55. From what I can tell the synchros weren't put in right. And it took some big chunks out of then the first time it was spun. The other thing was the output,or input bearing. The bearing that was put in there was a two piece bearing. A bearing with a race. There was a bit of movement in the shaft which I'm hoping was the cause of if coming out of gear.

When I had it rebuilt I think the only kit I could find was for a later H55F, that should explain the wrong bearing.

The rebuild was one of those "seemed good at the time." My wife had been taking karate and her instructor owned a tranny shop in Montgomery. I took the tranny there and they began the tear down. I wanted the B shaft to sell (which is another story). Weeks later I had the input shaft and bearing kit and dropped everything off including the H55F factory manual. The rebuild dragged out but I was in no hurry. After some time I finally picked it up. In the interim Morris had sold the shop and the rebuild was finished but in retrospect I think the job was rushed. Morris always seemed to be under a lot pressure. He later died of a hear attack.

The tranny story continues. This goes back to the days of the LCML. I had picked up a pair of FJ60s from a catfish farmer near Yazoo City, MS, the red 86 that I drive, and a wrecked 81. I parted out the 81 but was left with the body and frame. I traded this to a guy from New Brunswick, CA. I had a meeting in VA and hauled the 81 FJ60 to Richmond and these three Canadians came down with the H55F. We did the swap, at the time seemed like a good idea :D. I got rid of the lawn ornament FJ60 and acquired a 5 speed.

The story continues. The H55F had a B input shaft which won't work with a 2F. The B shaft goes with the 4 banger diesel. So I had the tranny torn down and the B shaft removed, but I needed a F/H shaft. Still in the old LCML days. I posted the B shaft for sale and some French Canadian said he had a H shaft that would work. So we did a trade. I sent the B shaft to him and he sent me a H shaft, except it was a HZ shaft. Could have worked with some minor mods but that was not what I wanted. I don't remember the guy's name but I think he knew the difference since he had shop and worked on LCs.

That's quite the history. Thanks. And I hope you don't think I'm ditching on you or the transmission. I have wanted an H55 for a lot of years and have never had an opportunity to get one. I feel very fortunate to have bought one and at such a good price. This is my first transmission rebuild. I'm just hoping it works well. It seems to shift well even without oil in it.

Done and done. Now I just hope it works. Toyota finally got the oiler and the oil seal for the speedo gear. I'm probably going over to the hanger tonight after scouts to install it and finish putting in the fuel tank and lines. Then tomorrow after the rtv cures I will hopefully take it for a spin.

Do you just run cheap oil in it for a few hundred miles, and then put in better oil?

GL 4 is recommended and not so easy to find. I located a couple of gallons ot 85-90 at NAPA, I think the brand was Sta-lube. Some people run GL 5 but from what I've read GL 4 is better for the synchros. The t-case can take GL 5 just fine.

Don't forget to locktite the bolt for the idler shaft retainer.

I didn't know about the locktite. Is the GL4 synthetic? I will call around. Thanks

The Sta-lube is regular stuff but there are other GL4s that are synthetic. $ynthetic.

Throw the less expensive stuff in it first to see how it's gonna work and if all is good swap out for the synthetic.
