I have an '89 FJ62 with stock gears and a 3" lift, running 31x10.50 BFG ATs. Need new tires badly, and have been following the posts on tire sizes with interest. Have decided I really want to go with 33" MTRs, and since I live in Florida with a lot of mud and sand, thought I would go with a 10.50 or 11.50. Thus my question: discussion seems to indicate a 33x9.50 will be acceptable on a 62, will 10.50 (or 11.50) MTRs also be acceptable, or will the width/tread pattern push me back to 31s? The truck's main use will be wheelin, but I have to get to the good spots, and that will mean highway travel. Sorry to stir the pot even more, but hopefully the holidays will produce a sale that I need to jump on.

BTW, the Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs are my first choice, followed by Firestone Destination M/T and BFG MT T/As in third place. And, I know that some of these brands don't have a 33x10/11, so that adds to the equation....

So I guess the real question is what width will allow you to run 33's? With 3" of lift you could run any of your choices with no problems. I would not go wider than 11.5", 12.5's might rub.

Go with the firestone's.

However, to run the 285-75/16 Firestone's you'd need bigger than stock wheels with the correct back spacing.

If you want to run 12.5s, you can. If they are of similar size to the BFG MT 12.5s, they'll probably rub in the front under full compression at having the wheel turned, but it's not a show-stopper. With an OME 2.5" lift, that's my experience.

Having not tried 11.5s, if you found them in the right size/tire I'd guess they wouldn't rub based on how little 12.5s rub.

I was looking at a 33x11.5 equivalent tire(285x75r16 i think) before I found a good deal on used 33x10.5s.

If you are airing down those tires on stock rims, I wouldn't go wider than 9.5 or you risk popping the bead off when deflated.. If you are going to a wider tire you'll need wider rims to match.

I run 33 x 10.5 on an eight inch wide rim.

Actually this is not true. A wide tire on a narrow rim will hold the bead better than a narrow tire on a narrow rim or narrow tire on a wide rim.

The force of the tire casing width pushing out on the wheel bead acts as a 'poor man's bead lock' and keeps the tire on the rim longer, at lower pressures.

i have the BFG mudders 33x10.5 on 8" wheel. IMOP, thos tires suk ass in the mud! atleast thats my experience. theyre great out here in CO, where rox are our objectives. i would suk it up, and buy the goodyear mudders...33x12.5...just my 2c

Yep, I ran 12.50's on 7" wheels and never lost a bead, even at 5 psi on the rocks! I've seen guys running around 10 psi loose the bead with a 12.50's on 8" wheels, and I can't even think of running a 10" like most 12.50 tires call for.

I have just a shackle lift on my '90 FJ62 and run 33x10.5-15 BFG AT's on stock rims (15x6) and have zero rub unless I am at absolute full stuff and full lock.

LOTS of people run 33x12.5 on the 2.5"-3"lifts with similar rub levels.

i for one am going 33x12.5 with the OME lift. it will be fine. oh yeah, the MTRs suck in the mud i have heard. go with the truxxs M/T... cheaper and way better...

Thanks for all the responses! Don't really want to spend the $$ for rims right now (saving my lunch money for a rear locker), so stock rims are going to be it for a while. I know lots of people run the BFG ATs, but since I will mostly be in sand and muck, I was thinking an MT would be a better option. 12.50s, never even thought of going that big. Would that kill me on the highway?

I'm running 33x12.5s on my 62, with the CCOT lift. Rubs a bit under full flex, good otherwise. I think my gas mileage has stayed about the same going from 31x10.5s for the 33x12.5s. If you do alot of highway driving, I'd think about the noise level too.

you can't fit, or i wouldnt fit, the 12.5s onto a stock rim. go with the 33x10.5... you'll love em. it is what i run, lots of people run em... landpimp may run lots of 9.5s... he might chime in but you will like the 33x10.5

oh yeah, i think M/Ts are bad in the sand, they dig too much and not float...

post some pics of the new setup!

MTRs do come in 32X11.50, that's what I run (with a 1.5 inch lift, no rubbing issues.) A good tire size for me, but you have more lift and may want 33s.

33x10.5 on a 62 like you have are great. I run them on my 60 and love them. With your set up I would say the 10.5 is better then the 9.5.

only 33x10.5 I know of is the BFG MT or AT.

wish goodyear would make something.

I ran 33 x 12.5 BFG MT's with OME HD Springs ~ 2.5" lift (although I used the slighly bigger rear (?) anti-inversion shackle on front and back) on my FJ60 with no significant rubbing problems (rubbed a little on the muffler pipe on passenger rear side).

I was using 15x8 rims though -- you can get the white spoke steel wagon rims cheap ($20-$25 ea?) in the correct backspacing if you want to go to 15x8's.

My experience has been the narrower the tire the more of a problem I have with popping beads -- the skinny tires seem pretty easy to pull off the rim when turning or straddling a gulley or rut.

Had a 88 FJ62 with 2" shackles and ran 32X11.50 BFG/MT on the stock rims. Looked and worked great. Keep in mind as you go wider on those tires you will throw up some dirt past the narrow fenders on the 60s.

I've seen the MTR in action. They will pack up very quickly with mud.

I have 33x10.5 swampers on my 40. They do very well! (If I save enough $ this winter, the 60 will get them!)
