Another! 02LX vs 03TLC comparison - opinions?

CLARIFICATION: the '02 is the LX, and the '03 is the TLC (title hasnt updated yet)

Alright guys, here are my options (complete seller's remorse after loosing my '99, so im getting back in the game :)):

2002 LX470, 48k
- M.L. audio package
- nav
- better color (small, but is a difference)
(and obvious bonuses of AHC, side airbags, higher resale, better dealer service)

2003 TLC, 44k
- nav
- 5sp
(not sure about side airbags)

Both run about $30k (the TLC is actually $1k more), and both have same KBB value (which i know is BS, but just as a point of reference)... which would you feel is the better deal? I'm leaning towards the lexus, but I was hoping to hear from folks if there really is that much of a performance 03+ w/ the 5sp tranny + upped HP... in all honesty, i could care less about the gatetype shifter or whatever its called, but just wanted to hear ppl's perspectives!

(This obviously would occur if both are considered to be in excellent condition after inspections by a Toyota mechanic)

Thank,
Santi

If the 02 is a Lexus CPO I would go for it.

If not, it is a bit of a toss up, but I would favor the 02, especially if is still has a few months and 2K on its factory warranty. It allows you to get an extended warranty if you desire at the "new" price.

I like the 4 spd shifter better than the 5 spd shifter, but I like the 5 spd performance better. The ML audio is a plus and so is AHC. The HP difference is negligible, its the 5 spd and VGRS that make the performance difference. My wife liked the look of the pre-03 dash better, and I was ambivolent about the drivetrain, so we got an older model (2001). My wife was not impressed with the difference between the LC and LX at first, but after driving the LX for awhile she discovered all the small things that add up. The LX really works well with a tall and short driver (memory settings, and AHC low for loading and entry).

The LX should be considerably quieter and also has longer lasting leather. You've also got service to consider. The Lexus service people are sooooo much nicer than the Toyota ones.

Another thing to consider is future residual. The LX is probably slowing down on it's depreciation whereas the LC is still dropping fast. In one year those same KBB values will probably show the LX as being worth more.

Yes, the LX has a smoother ride, especially noticed on gravel, and it is quieter. It is also better insulated making it cooler in the summer. Lexus customer service is significantly better than Toyota, though I have a good relationship with the Toyota service dept, so I tend to get my work done there if I don't do it myself.

Guys, thanks for all your help - i am now officially a proud owner of a new-to-me Blue Vapor Metallic LX470 in pristine condition! TY!!!

Congratulations, sounds like you did great.

Did 02's have side curtain airbags, for some reason I thought that started in 03.

When I bought my 03, the salesman told me all lexus vehicles from 02 on have side bags standard. A friend of mine bought a new 03 LC back then and had to pay $800 for the side bags. The levinson audio became standard maybe in '05 or so, but virtually every LX imported into the US has the option along w/ dvd nav. BTW, the rear woofer is in the left panel next to the left jump seat. If you have that jump seat folded, it obscures the sound compared to if it's down or removed.
