Eclipse expected to be most striking in decades

There's a rare eclipse today peaking at 6:39 pm. Anyone with a welding mask should be able to get a safe look. If anyone has the proper photography equipment, please share the pics. It looks like it should be pretty cool.:cool:

They dont come around too often. My teen kids have never seen one.

Should be pretty cool :cool:

As viewed through developed X-ray film - at the peak of ~80% occlusion;

Welding googles/mask would probably work better, and for those interested, that's not my hand film!

No way to look at it myself.:frown: But I love hanging out outside during a solar eclipse. The sunlight has an odd, eery quality to it, kind of like a super bright full moon.:cool:

I caught the trail end of it. I used a pair of binoculars and projected the image onto a white background. It was pretty clear, but didn't have enough hands to get any pics.

Even up in Flagstaff it was only about 87% occlusion, so you'd need to get REALLY far North to get the umbra and solar ring. As BrotherRob said above, the really odd thing is how the light changes; easy to see how ancient cultures could equate this to some kind of heavenly activity when the eclipse is so short-lived.

Peaked here in Norcal at 6:28. We drove North towards Chico and viewed the eclipse inside the Feather River Nature Preserve. Had about 5 minutes of the complete "ring of fire". Pretty awesome. Nice to be so close to the epicenter of this thing. Welding helmet was the way to go.

I was at the right place in 1970 for a total eclipse when I was a kid.
