krecon1,

Sounds good! We'll see you in the morning

Great run today - snow was getting waaay deep at the turnover point. Best guess is close to 2.5ft - perhaps a little more. It was very dry, so the trail was difficult to pack down. No issues with any vehicles, just great weather....if you consider blue skies and temps in the teens great weather!

cool! or rather "effing cold"! blue skies, thumbs up! single digits, thumbs down! i guess i'm not feeling tough enough to brave it, stupid cold. glad you guys had a good time.

how far did you guys go up the trail? anyone have a gps log? and MORE PICS!!!

Guy with his two sons in the Xterra and myself in the FJ40 returned via the Paliza Trail. The group made it up to approx. -106.54122, 35.76589 (I am just guessing on these coords., we did not make it to where the powerlines cross the trail); Mike recorded a GPS location. While returning, the others went up the Jeep Cut-Off trail to FR 266. The last radio contact I had was with Mike is when he called out that they made it to the top of the mesa on FR 266. I thought that they were coming back out FR 266 to the air up/down spot. I waited for a little bit and called on the radio and all quiet. I felt uneasy losing radio contact, however, knowing that they had a good group of vehicles and I was solo as Guy headed down the road, I decided to head back to Corrales.

To Note: The Sandoval County ARES (SCARES, SCAERS Home Page) has a repeater that covers this area. The repeater 443.10+ (100hz pl) is linked to their Rio Rancho repeaters. Before leaving the North Portal, I checked in with Mike Scales of SCARES to monitor the SCARES repeaters so if I had to call for help he could respond. I checked in with M. Scales after I made it back to Hwy 550.

--> The point being, simplex does not always work and having a 2m/70cm amateur radio so you can hit those odd 70cm freq is very helpful. Knowing that I can contact SCARES up Paliza Canyon is comforting. Oh, by the way, Bernalillo and Sandoval County ARES can always use new members.

And the pictures, I did not get the best pictures:

Looking at going smaller than a netbook/laptop, but larger than a phone:

  1. application: https://confluence.prodevelop.es/display/GVMN/Home
  2. device: Galaxy Tab | Samsung Tablets
Viking does not have a mobile application unless you have a gps enabled PDA. Then you can download Viking, QGIS, etc. Or run a a laptop, netbook, tablet (expensive).

Or go smaller as listed in items #1 and 2. And allows you to download maps for offline viewing when out of cell phone range.

And gvSIG is well supported on the Desktop GIS side.

Sounds like a great day! Sorry I missed it. I'm hoping for more snow runs in the next month or two. Thanks for posting up some pics.

heh, tease you and you don't disappoint... i knew you had to have some kind of plan already :D

yeah those UMPC's are sexy... if you go non driod, ie windows then you can run all kinds of stuff, mobile specific or not. but i'm sure a guy like you is only going to put linux on your tablet.

i think for the next evolution i'm going to try my netbook, also have an old laptop, but its pretty bulky. i'd like to get routing, topos, and APRS all in one stop. just bought the kenwood 710, going to just run it with my garmin for now. i need to build up my laptop infrastructure before i switch over.

Snow Run

Yellow is what we did, red is what we didn't.

Nice to see old friends and meet new ones.

Cripe that is some SNOW! well done fellas! i must admit i'm having some small regret pains, but i'll get over them. ;)

It looks like we were 3/4 of the way to the Caldera ridge; I wonder how deep the snow was up there. Here are some of our pics. :)
