Definitely the coolest time of day. You have a chance to drive it this afternoon in the heat?
I did. In about 8 miles or so in stop and go then freeway it got to 223 and I shut down the AC and flipped over the heater and the temp dropped to 218ish. With the AC off we got home and it was sitting around the same. It was around 120 outside. I also noticed a low end ping... I checked the timing today and it was at 4 and 5 degrees.

Yeah definitely. Today after work if I'm feeling motivated I'll start the radiator swap or at least drain it. Question, does water wetter separate in the coolant. Can you see it?

update* its been too damn hot to start the rad swap but I did plug in my block/head gasket/combustion leak tester into the radiator and the good news is that the head gasket is still good. no coolent loss, no milky oil, and no oil in the coolent. while the coolent level was low I poured in some of that prestone flush stuff and let it run for a bit then shut it down and went inside. later on I went back out and tested the HG again. the coolent I removed on that test was placed into a clear water bottle and the amount of muck floating around was insane. so today im going to flow it all again and again tomorrow. Friday, im going to drain the entire system remove the radiator hoses and back flush then drain completely. front and rear. fill it up with distilled water and drain again. when that's all done ill swap the radiator and do a fluid change in the transmission. since I cant get dex 2 or 3 I went with that Castrol transmax.

also will be replacing the exhaust gaskets and the donut gaskets down to the first cat. while those exhaust parts are all out ill be scrubbing them down and looking for cracks. if all is well they will get wrapped with header wrap and coated. hopefully all the loud ticking is just a bad gasket and not the valves. if its the valves, I get to do the head gasket as a bonus... not looking forward to that...
I also get an occasional p0420 code. I have new denso 02 sensors. the codes slowed from almost every time I go out to having 1 in the last 4 months.

ill also be tightening all the heat shields while im down there...

Water Wetter blends right into the coolant. It is invisible once it is in the radiator, you cannot see it.

We usually pull the transmission drain plug and drain it out while doing (10,000mile) engine oil changes. Takes about a gallon to top it off.

there was something in the coolent but couldnt tell what it was when I posted that. then i realized I just changed the tstat and there was that white residue that resembled hard water scale. that's probably what it was. I tried to scrape it off as best I could and im guessing that some got in there. ill know when I flush the system if its still there... also, just so im clear, the flow of these radiators is from the rad to the tstat correct?
