It seems like there are a lot of threads now about the power steering pump system. How about another...

Anybody added a inline filter on the low pressure return line to the power steering pump reservoir? What kind of filter did you use and where did you get it? Napa sells a some but was wondering what others have done.

I just added a small cooler up front for my power steering pump and am replacing the hoses so it would be a good time to throw in a filter. Seems like it would help keep the system cleaner.

yes, this one.

Here's the one I use the most of. It is for inline a 3/8 or 10mm hose.

Carquest inline tranny/PS filter. PN 85953

There is a different number for the 5/16 or 8mm hose used on 1980-earlier FJ40/55. don't have that one handy.

Is this something you ever change and if so, does it spill p/s fluid all over? How often? Or do you leave it until you need work on your p/s pump?

My car has a filter in the bottom of the power steering reservoir. The filter would hook inline on the return line so you would get some fluid dripping chaning it but not a big deal. Not something you would need to change often. I figure it is cheap insurance for your power steering system which is stressed once you add big tires and are doing a lot of slow manuvers offroading.

another number:

Napa 1-8514
Raybestos Magnefine (Magnetic) 3/8" in line filter for AT or PS.
