Hello,

I am pretty new here, but i've been reading many threads about bypassing the amp. I want to replace my headunit and also install new speakers. I have been reading many threads on here about bypassing the amp, and i noticed that you cut and splice the speaker wires and also the power to the head unit. But what about the other wires that are left alone? They are left un-powered, but will it affect anything?

Someone else will probably chime in before I get my service manual with wiring diagrams in. In not I'll be able to tell you what goes where. I can tell you that with my amp removed (2000 TLC) the head doesn't power up

I think I can help here. Watch this:

If you bypass the amp you need to either connect the power in the amp area under the seat or find another switched power source. The factory unit is powered from the amp so if the amp goes away something else needs to provide power or you need to connect the wires in the amp area to each other.

After those wires are connected so the headunit can get power.. there are still left over wires that are still in the harness. From what I understand and assume, is that those will not be affected? Having been plugged into the amp before..?

I just find it confusing that the speakers and the power will be connected to each other, and then the other wires are left to dry.

Off the top of my head I think you'll have the following wires left over which are not re-used:
-Stereo Ground (factory system uses a non-chassis ground for the amp/stereo)
-Beep
-Accessory line going into Amp
-about 3 chassis grounds for the amp

These are all used for the amp, which can be removed entirely once you do a thorough bypass.

Hello all. Hope you guys don't mind me reviving this thread. I installed an aftermarket deck and everything worked. Just not very good. hissing sound and one rear speaker wasn't working. ..then realized from you guys I have to bypass amp. Started utilizing the forums. Started rewiring, now here I sit with a hot mess...lol. I have the deck running but no sound. and my antenna only comes up for 2 seconds and freezes, never coming back down. I wired as best as I could gather, but some stuff on the web has conflicting info. Hopefully the pics I post can help you gather info about my problem. Please help if you can. Thanks again.

Too many extra wires unaccounted for.

Speakers wired per the forums and TLC FAQ....or totally wrong per me
The only things wired between the 2 wire bundles from the amp.

@RGRPILOT did you run new speaker wire from the head unit to the old amp location? This is absolutely required as the original radio shared the same ground for all channels feeding the amp. All you are trying to accomplish with the amp bypass is to power the head unit and to attach the heads units speaker outputs to the existing speaker wires feeding the doors (which were the amp output).

Ok thanks.. ill check it out as soon as I can. I figured that since it worked with the new stereo the wiring was fine. Thanks again
