Hi. I'm experiencing noNE of the culustomary problems of a bad alternator but when u put the battery tester on the positive and negative terminals of the battery it shows 12.3 volts when truck is off and 12.2 when on. 11.9 when lights are on... with an American vehicle this would tell me my alternator is bad but I heard some foreign vehicles are different. The issue came up because my remote start is not working properly. It keeps shutting down and restarting again. The remote start works off of the battery. It knows that the vehicle is on when the battery voltage is over 12. Something . This led the installer to check the battery voltage first and to tell me he thinks my alternstor ia bad. Yet ive been driving the truck regularly with no problems and the battery is showing full. Btw the installer used the same meter on another vehicle and the voltahe jumped to 14+ with the vehicle on. So is my alternstor bad? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like it's on it's way out. Volt meter on mine reads 14+ when running.

With engine RUNNING the alternator should be putting out 14V or more into the battery. Check/verify fusible links, if original they should be replaced just for the heck of it. Check voltage output of alternator at the alternator to eliminate connectors/cables etc. Could be as simple as the brushes needing replacing or cables.

You SHOULD add your vehicle info (engine, year etc) into your signature...

cheers,
george.

Thank you for the advice. It's a 94 lc with the 4.5 6 cylinder. 224k but generally in great shape. It's been good to me. I will check these things now.
