Has anyone upgraded there fj60 or fj40 alternator with one from a 62 or 80 series? I want higher amps but not Mean Green amps/cost. Thanks

Yes, I just did the 80A 3FE upgrade a couple weeks ago, w/ a $40 used alt. Was a big improvemnt over the tired 60A alt.

But truck is currently snowed in, so no pics yet.

There is also an opt 90A alt for FJ62 that will fit in the same spot, but I've never seen one on a cruiser. It is in stock at the parts store, so I'm guessing it fits other Toys, like a cressida or 4runner.

Questions to follow - if someone has a MUD link with the writeup please reply and post for future searchers - I've never heard of this alt swap before!

Does it use the same Toyota connectors as the 55amp OEM one? I've been looking into updating to a 90amp GM alternator, but would prefer to stay ND if at all possible - if I can keep the same plastic clip that would be dandy.

Also, part # or model of vehicle that can be used to scrounge that Toyota amp would be appreciated if anyone has it handy!

No, the connector is a different configuration. but both connectors are made up of standard 1/4" spades, so a little home-made adapter harness is all that is required. Better would be to get the alt & a few inches of harness off the donor truck. Maybe get the donor harness end from the JY off a similar vintage camry or something?

The alt off a 3FE engine is the one. It can be found on 1988-1992 FJ62 or FJ80. The FZJ80 mounting ear is totally different.

Pics are here.

Lovetoski, Is there a Denso/toyota part # label on the alt off the 80 still?

According to the parts fiche and the FSM wiring diagram, there is only one plug config on the 3FE alternators, the 3-pin type. It will not accept the 2-pin FJ60 alt connector. It would seem that the 80 in question had the alt swapped out to the 1987 type.

Jim,

I'm trying to put an FJ80 alt in a FJ60. The 80 alt that I have has three electrical spades labled L-S-G. Do I just connect the L and G lugs and leave the S termanal open?

Thanks for the help.

Anyone have the wiring diagram for a 91 FJ80 alt? I searched and only found the wiring diagram for the FJ60. Or better yet the wiring directions for this conversion? I am bored at work and cannot focus on my job:doh:.

My boss thanks you.

Frank

??

The 90A option has a slightly different mounting configuration ( the bottom ears have a smaller spacing).
So, the 90A option must have a different mounting bracket?

I am using the 80 amp version. Like the middle picture in Jim's post number 6 of this thread. So it bolts right in. Just need to figure how to wire it.

Well 40/60guy (me too -- 1 of each), I have a Haynes manual. The additional connection is labeled 'S'.
It goes to fusible link with 50A fuse. All else same

On the 62 S and B are tied together. On the 80 series they are not.

Has anybody actually done this mod? It is not the 4th of July so I don't want any fireworks when I crank over the truck.

Yes, this has been done on my shop truck, works great.

There are 2 terminals on the 79-87 2F alt: IG and L.

There are 3 terminals in the 3FE plug: IG, L, and S.

IG is 12V+ from the ignition switch to excite the alt (turns on the charging).

L turns off the charge light in the dash

S senses the chassis voltage and adjusts the alternator output to hold it at ~14V

The IG and S wire can be the same source, telling the alt to turn on, and showing the alt what the chassis voltage is.

The 90 amp alternator that is an option for the 3FE engine requires a different mounting bracket. Does anyone know if the bracket for the 90 amp alt, 3FE engine, will fit on a 2F engine?
thanks

FJ40Jim,
the wiring diagram shows 4 connection points. On the 3FE, the 3pin plug connector is labeled 'IG', 'S', & 'B'.
Or at least that's how it is marked in the Haynes manual I have.
