I'm throwing some new TREs on and once I get over some tie rod problems, I'll more than likely run it over there to get an alignment.
 
Oh, I'd never forget about John. Unfortunately, he's going on vacation soon, so I was considering other sources.

I think he is getting soft. First it is ski boats, now vacations...

I'm guessing next it will be plastic surgery! :D
 
I've already warned him that the boat will be the downfall of his buisness, and offered to sacrifice my own success by taking this evil off of his hands - of course for the betterment of the northern Colorado Land Cruiser community...

I have an appointment today to get the 45 in to Ken's for an alignment. I then plan on running it over to John's for some other work to get the puppy read for our convoy down to the RS Rally.

I really hope the alignment helps, because even after all new TREs and a Center Arm rebuild, I'm still getting some slop in the steering.

Have you adjusted the box itself? Ther is a lock and adjustment on the side facing the exhaust manifold. That can help...

TJ, I'm using a minitruck powersteering gearbox. I'll look once I get the truck back to see if there is an adjustment point on it.

Oh, I meant to add that I got the alignment job done and the tech said that two things might be cause the problem.

- My front axle caster is at -2.1 and -2.6 degrees and that a 4degree shim would help.

- The wide tires (285s) are causing much of the road wandering.

Anyway, the truck is up at John's to get some other work done and a second opinion.

I'll be intersted in what John says.

I came out w/ ~ -1 degree caster and was contemplating shims (see my Downey thread)

John said he nver needs shims and that my trunion bearings were loose. The passenger side was/is.

But neg ative caster is negative caster in my book. I am still thinking about shims.
 
John suggested that I may have the same problem, but said he would like at the bearings to confirm that.
 
I tried to get into john's for a tune up but he said he was a month behind!

I settled on Metric Motors in loveland and paid for it! Man, they are expensive. Anyways I still need to make it up to Ken's for alignment.

When I take it there for the alignment. What exactly should they be looking at? I have a slight vibration around 26mph and am hoping a good alignment could help. I know about toe in, but what other alignment could they look at? Thanks for the help.
 
I went in there and Sean, the tech, asked me some questions about how it was driving and put it on the machine. Then showed me the numbers and explained in detail what was causing what.

The only thing not mentioned was anything about the front knuckles.

I thought it was a good job, but knowing that Land Cruisers are unique, I wanted to get a cruiserhead's opinion as well.
 
My guess is shims...it's no different than any other solid axle vehicle when you lift it, it rotates the axle. Just dealt with this on my 80.

I was at -2.8 & -2.6 and she was a bit squirrley, darty would be the better word, about 75 or 80 (not that a lot of you 40 guys would know about that ;) ) Fixed caster/DL angles and I'm slightly better than stock. at 4.6 and 4 positive. it drives/tracks very straight and is very predictable with 35" Trxus.

My 55 had shims for the 4" + lift I had on it. I never ran it without them but I'd imagine it would have been even scarier. It wasn't *that* bad...but a lot of that could have been steering component slop and armstrong steering.

Shims are only like what 5$??? and very easy to put in...can't hurt to try it. I know the stock caster for the 80 series was between 2 and 4...dunno about the 45's/40 series...but my guess is it's at LEAST 1 degree, in which case you are out 3+ degrees.
 
Alignment for a 40?????? Just measure the front and rear of the front tires, go from "bulge" to "bulge", or jack it up and scribe a chalk line around the tire as you spin it...then measure. Run it about a 1/4 inch towed in. you cant adjust any thing else. Ive done this for years and my tires wear perfect and its got the right feel.
 
Oh yeah, caster degree....the only right was to do it is to cut and rotate...Ive 4 deg. on the caster, 10 on the pinion...
