My A440 is going downhill fast. Can anyone recommend a reputable transmission shop in Albuquerque that could either rebuild it or install a new one?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks so much.

Eric

Eric,

Have you been to the 3FE list on Yahoo? They talk about the A440F all the time, and the options for repair/replacement. I think guests can lurk and skim the archive.

Two thoughts. I'm assuming since you are having a problem you have a FJ62. If you keep the A440F you might want to install a tranny cooler. The FJ62s didn't have one, and this was resolved on the FJ80s. The A440F in the 80's seem to last longer. I just checked the U-Pull inventory and they are still listing the 1991 FJ80. Last time I was there the engine was gone, but the tranny was still there. I don't think it's plug and play into a FJ62 because of the transfer case, but it should be close.

Second option. Install an H55F 5-speed. The folks on the 3FE list that have done this rave about the swap.

Thanks for the reply, Pappy.

Yes, I do have an FJ62 with about 198,000 miles on it.

First, I plan to drop the pan, clean the filter, and replace the transmission fluid. I figure that would be the prudent thing to do before I commit to much more expensive options like rebuilding or buying a new one.

I think I'd rather go with another A440F with a transmission cooler. The 5 speed conversion just sounds complicated and quite expensive from what I gather on the the 3FE board. Btw, thanks for hooking me up with that discussion board.

I think my best bet is to just buy a new one from Toyota or maybe an Extreme one from Rodney in Australia (if I can afford it).

Rodney would be the best way to go. I think he also sells just the valve body, but I can't recall if that solves some of the issues or not.

Oh, where are my manners ... welcome to HDC@IH8MUD ... :flipoff2: <-- official welcome salute.

Alright, here's the complete situation as it appears to me at the time:

My A440F in my FJ62 is starting to slip and the transfer case is leaking pretty
fierce. Looks like its got transmission fluid in it, too. I guess the seal
between the two is cooked?

I'm hoping that the transmission is just low on fluid, due to it being pumped
into the transfer case.

Damn, I had this same problem on my '83 FJ60. Thought Toyota would have fixed
that problem with the 62, guess not.

Anyway, does anyone have a recommended course of action? I get the feeling this is all going to cost a lot of money and time!

Thanks, guys.

How are you with tools? I'm going to guess the seal between the tranny and tc is worn. Replacement requires removal of the tc, which needs to come off in pieces. It's not that hard, but does take time. I have the service manual and can make copies of the necessary pages. I would replace all of the seals and gaskets on the tc while in there, and would consider rebuilding the tc too. I would guess a weekend in the garage.

I know the tc can come off without tranny removal. I saw another fella in the club do it on a boneyard truck. He wanted the tc.

In case you don't know, Dan at American Toyota gives HDC members a discount on parts. I can't remember if it's 20% or 25%. I just pay it.

I noticed you have also asked at 3FE. Good move.

I'm alright with tools, but I think this job would necessitate a call to some of my more inclined friends. Hopefully, they'll be willing to help.

I think my main problem is the transfer case. It would probably be best to have all seals and gaskets replaced, maybe even a rebuild. My transmission is still kickin' pretty good. I think it slips when it's cold because it's low on fluid due to the t/c. Once it warms up it doesn't slip at all, and I don't have any abrupt crashing into gear with the output shaft like I've heard so many others mention.

I hope the problem can be rectified by addressing the TWO seals between the transmission and transfer case.

And, yes, I've heard much about Dan from my friend Greg, who drives an FJ80. So, if I understand correctly, because I'm registered on this board makes me a member of HDC? That would be cool, given the 20-25% discount.

Thanks, dude. You rock. I might take you up on that offer for copies of the service manual. Then again, I might just buy one, as my friend Greg has been telling me to get one all along.

we are a chapter of the Toyota Land Cruiser Assoc. so, you have to be a member of them and then can join our club as well. the TLCA dues are about $25 and you get the Toyota Trails magazine (6 issues). our dues are $20, due in Jan, so prorated now would be $10. feel free to come to a meeting or run and meet everyone before joining. no pressure. we are a fun family oriented group. oh, and welcome to ih8mud!- :flipoff2:

edit: is your friend Greg a member? the name with an 80 series doesn't ring a bell, but i'm getting older and a failing memory...is your friend Greg a member?

Yes, Greg is a member of TLCA. Not sure about HDC, though. I'll have to ask him. I think I'm going to finally join TLCA and HDC, too. I say finally because I've been the driver of Toyota Land Cruisers exclusively for over ten years now. I guess it's finally time to join the club, as they say.

Who do I contact to join HDC?

Thanks for the welcome, guys.
