Hey all, a little bird told me Jared made it to Alaska just fine, may be a little while before he can get an internet connection to update here, tho.
Oh, and Jared I made it to the forum just fine :). Good talking to you and have a great trip!

I doubt it is elevation issues you are experiencing since the highest road in Alaska only goes to 3,400 feet above sea level. In fact, most of the roads are at sea level or just above.
My guess is that your deiseling from the crappy gas you have been burning on the ALCAN! try some octane booster as well as some HEAT (water dispacement product)
It happens to me as well every year when I make that drive!!
Have fun

Hey guys, I am in Tok as we speak, at Fast Eddy's - reindeer sausage omelette.....mmmmm.....(I think it was Blitzen)

JR, great to see you on here! I met Mosley on the way up. He's good people, and basically built himself a 40 with his dad. I told him there would be demands for pictures shortly. He also found a 45 in parts in a farmer's field (yes, I hate him for that too) so there will be a thread on his build (think cummins diesel and other goodies) at some point. I told him to just grab a toy diesel from Canada, but he was complaining about those damn border guards.

Travis, you've got the girl for the next 18 years, and me for only a few days! Just kidding man, totally understand. Congratulations. I'll drop you a line when I hit town and if you can get out for a beer and some truck talk, we'll call it good.

Shane, I registered and voted for you. 2WD all the way!

Anyway, here's me:

Congrats!!! Enjoy your stay.:bounce::bounce2:

:D Thx..I don't think it'll count though b/c all of the heated drama going on. :p
*FWIW it's normally not too like that there.

So have you considered resetting the carb and checking the air filter b/c of the particles out there b/c of the eruption?? Last time I went through that way, especially after crossing into Portland my filter was clogged even though you couldn't easily tell. Throw in a new one, they're cheap.

It's jared - I'm sitting in Travis' living room, full of alaskan halibut tacos and alaskan brewed beer. Heading out tomorrow AM for Anchorage, and from there through the Kenai down to Kodiak. Trip going great. Travis and his crew (including 2 40s, 2 60s and an 80, not to mention a 41 dodge power wagon) are proving a great welcoming committee. Will keep you guys posted as I go.

I put some updates from the trip, including links to some good pictures, on the blog.

F this - I'm going to Alaska

More pics PLS!!!!:bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2:

Had a great time with Travis and his clan. The new one is incredibly cute, and the 6 year old can form better arguments than me, using bigger words. Ibought her pizza though and made her promise to remember me when she takes over the world. I did find the hat (that hat has cost me more drama on this trip....) and I found about 70 record albums (another one of my obsessive hobbies) in a local pawn shop. Clapton, Bowie, Zeppelin, all unplayed (for those who care). Sweet. The girlfriend is gonna love this.

As for the dieseling, the timing is a bit aggressive (probably overboard now, as I set it for my old carb and have since put in the JimC rebuilt version). I think Tom was right though - it's gone down a lot since I got to Alaska, so could have been the fuel in BC and the Yukon. I'll dial back the timing as a precaution though.

As far as volcanos and filtration go, it's a beautiful day, far from the Terminator 2 ash storm I was expecting. I may through another filter in just because of all the miles I'm putting on it, but ashy death has not arrived for the truck yet.

As far as pictures go, I have a bunch on the blog.

fthis-imgoingtoalaska.blogspot.com

I would have used mud for the whole thing, but the lack of an automatic picture resizing tool meant I was going elsewhere. I didn't even use the blog for large picture uploads, as it was a 5 at a time process. I link to facebook albums.

More pics coming tonight though of Denali. Unbelievable place.

However, my complaint is that I've seen more wildlife on the signs telling me to watch out for all the wildlife than on the ground. Still waiting for a moose. Watch, now that I've jinxed myself, I'm going to wake up with a bear spooning me.

*Tried rubbing yourself in bacon fat? :D

Stop traveling down the highway so damn fast so your rig stops whistling and they'll start to show up. That, or just find a spot to park and sit back and wait and watch...last time we tried that a baby bear and momma went walking right behind me while the wife freaked. :)

I actually meant DOWN in elevation, last time he adjusted it was Wolf Creek Pass which tops at over 10,800ft.

So I thought it might be a bit too advanced.

Figured I would post here as well...............
Jared is in homer, alaska and phoned in a trouble with his 60. He is experiencing a really rough idle that holds at 250 rpm. It is extremely rough idle. The exhaust also has a pungent odor of burnt hydrocarbons or even a burnt plastic smell. He has a new cad-convert and all vacuums are in place. No plastic bags on the manifold or exhaust pipe either! Prompt replies are indeed appreciated as he is trying to get on a ferry to Kodiak, Alaska.
Thanks from the command center.

Yep, the truck's not doing too well at the moment. I got in and drove around a little to see if it was a chunk of something I could burn off the cat, or if she could just walk it off.

Starting it up was interesting. She'd start, surge to about 1200 rpm and die. Did that twice before I got it to catch. Got on down the road, stalling once or twice at low speed when the idle dropped.

I pulled into napa and suddenly she was idling fine, albeit at 1000 rpm. turned it off, back on, same thing. Running like a top at 1k. OK, I had messed with the timing a little during the preliminary assessment with tom, so I might have advanced it too much. Dialed it back to about 700, adn she was great. Then pulled into a hotel parking lot to pirate their wifi and she's back to running like s***. I have no idea what's going on.

Air filter is clean and makes no difference.

I replaced the fuel filter because I had one and the old one was dirty. No difference.

Carb is newly rebuilt by JimC. He and I are trying to trace down a leak on it, but it's been on since California with no issues.

Vacuum tubing is all in place, has not been touched for the duration of the trip (carb tubes taken off and put back in CA)

no vacuum leaks, as confirmed by liberal amounts of carb cleaner on and around the carb.

Any thoughts at all would be appreciated.

My 79 40 was doing similar antics once, it also backfired some so probably not the same, However it was the distributer had turned on it's own because the locking nut had fallen out due to me "messing" with it so much. New nut, a REAL (read: NOT ME) mechanic setting the timing I was good to go..

while I'm at it thought #2...get some carb cleaner, hose down every thing, meaning in the carb body, see if something breaks loose ingested with that bad fuel that has been mentioned...(like a mix of gas and diesel?..) Probably not the case cause I think I saw two fuel filters under Jared's hood..

EDIT for thought #3...Is that golf Tee still in your egr vacuum hose?
