Hi, I recently put FJ60 brakes on my FJ40 and I am having a hard time turning the aisin hubs. You have to put a lot of effort into them to get them to turn from free to locked and visa versa. They also wont go all the way to locked, the dial stops short. Any ideas on whats going on? Thanks

Dumb question, but did you change the axles? The '65 axles are coarse spline on the outside.

Odd, do you have a FSM?

I took mine apart, soaked the pieces in a parts washer overnight and cleaned them real well. Then I reassembled them according to the FSM, with a dab of grease on the few spots the manual shows (not too much grease) and reinstalled.
They have never been more smooth and they make a nice solid sound when they lock or unlock.
I would assume one of the two springs is just not installed correctly and is binding....

I installed the brakes on a 69 font axle. I did pack them with grease. I dont have a FSM for a FJ60. I will have to check the springs out when I tear them apart again.

My past owner drove around with the hubs always on lock, and to this day, they are smooth and have a definate audible engagement when they are changed to or from lock.

This is likely the cause of your problems. If you packed the locking hub mechanism full of grease it will be tough to opperate. Just take off the bolts in the hub clean out the grease and then lightly grease all the surfaces. It shouldn't take more than a half hour    . Good luck

Ok, so I took off both hubs and cleaned them out and lightly greased them. They trun very smooth now but there is still one problem. On one of the hubs, the dial won't turn all the way to free. The spring is fully compressed and unlocked about a half inch before the dial reaches the free position on the hub. The dial turns to locked just fine. Should I even worry about this? Thanks.

I would be concerned if it didnt go all the way to free. Take it off, spin it from lock to free while holding it and see where it sticks. When you cleaned them did you take them completely apart? Springs too?

I know with mine the small spring wasnt riding correctly in the groove, so when I would spin it they would bind.

Do you have a FSM? That break down was very helpful.

I took them completely apart and put them back together every which way and the same thing happens. The spring is fully compressed when its almost to free so its not binding somewhere.

Double check the clutch and tension spring. I couldnt remember what they were called in that earlier post. If the tension spring isnt riding correctly in the groove on the clutch the hub wont engage properly.

The spring had slipped on mine, and even though it came out stuck together since it wasnt right the dial would not turn at all.
