My carbeurator runs ok, but probably needs a rebuild.

I've been considering switching to a Weber, but I'd like to stay original for now. I know that I can get a re-manufatured Aisin for about $250, and I suspect that it will take me $60 and at least a weekend to rebuild mine.

So, if I got the reman. one (no core), how much might I be able to get (reasonably) for a '77 federal Aisin carb from my FJ40 thats in decent shape? I searched the "for sale" section, but didnt see anything helpful this time.

If any of you have sold one, please let me know.

Thanks-
Anthro

Anthro, I've got a '73, rebuilt and never run, boiled out, complete. I'm asking $85 for mine, but that might be a little low.
Usually one in the shape you're talking about would be $35-55, needing rebuilt.

That's just what I've seen on Ebay.

If your getting your carb rebuilt, you won't have one to sell.
Most places and people want a core, some (Jim C) won't do it without a core.
You're probably better off keeping it and getting it rebuilt.
After my freshly rebuilt Aisin and late 2f electro ingiton, I would never consider anything else. No reason.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I guess I was hoping for somewhere in the $50 range.

CrusinGA, I wasnt planning on getting mine rebuilt, I was planning on buying a re-manufactured one, and they don't want a core. The other option is rebuilding it myself. Seems stupid to pay someone $250 to rebuild one when I can get a reman. one for that much. The electronic ignition is my next step :D

My rebuilt came ready to run specifically for my truck out of the box. Including the correct vacuum for the vac advance on my electronic ignition. I made no adjustments.
Reman's aren't like that. (Whats the difference between a full on rebuild and a reman anyway?)

You will love the elec. ign. HUGE difference. Which are you doing, late 2F or non-usa with pertronix?

Antrho,Group..

I have a stock 08/76 2F and just picked up a good electronic 78 distributor. What else do I need to find? Just the ignitor and coil?

Also, Anthro if you are rebuilding your carb, would you sell it then (that is if you are buying a reman?)

I have a core, but need to find an inexspensive rebuild or strong runner.

Thanks,

Dallas

The 78 distributor is only semi-electronic. It is not an upgrade.
You need a 81-87 "big cap" distributor with matching coil and ignitor. It is fully electronic, vacuum advance.
Also, you either get an 81-87 pushrod cover or take a hammer to yours to gain clearance for the larger distributor.
I would highly recommend Jim C for a carb rebuild. He is pricey ~$270, but mine was out of the box ready to bolt on and use, looks brand new, and functions better than.
However, you can purchase a rebuild kit for ~$30.
If I were you, and I did not need to drive my cruiser immediatly, I would rebuild the original myself, and install 81-87 ignition.

I dunno, I think 78 is fully electonic, but a small cap, I know my 78 fj55 is so.

Maddox, if I get the reman, then I won't bother rebuilding my current Carb. I'll just sell it as is.

CruisinGA,
I don't know exactly how a reman. differs from a good rebuild, as far as the quality of the end product. I hear that Jim C does awesome work, but my cruiser is my daily driver and I can't part with my carb for that long, and he's more expensive than a reman. Either way, i'm going to have to have someone tune the carb and timing before I get emissions tests again, so having it set for my Cruiser isnt that big an issue.

The pertronix doesnt actually fit the '77, at least, not according to their website (and what I've heard otherwise). I think my options are either doing the HEI distributer, which would be cheap from a junk-yard, or something like the Crane Fireball 700 or 3000 kit, which is $90 or $114 from Summit.

Either way, the carb is my first priority, since I still have to pass Colorado emissions :)

With an 81-87 you do not have to use Mels or Pertronix. It is full electronic from the factory.
I got everything I needed from a mud lister for $125. Thats Toyota, full electronic waterproof, ball bearing vac advance ignition. Hard to beat.

Hey Anthro, Don't go to the Colorado Air Care center for an emissions. I went to a place in Aurora off of Iliff (??) and Buckley and passed with no problems. Found out later from a mechanic that the PO had removed some of the emissions equip. the guy should have noticed.

Also, get the 5yr collectors plate. you NEVER have to get another emissions. Otherwise, it's yearlly.

I think you are right John. The '78 is a good upgrade, because it is fully electronic and sealed much better than earlier models.

OK, so if I buy a 78 electronic Distributor will it fit in my 77 w/o any modifications?
