Hello,

strange issue with my BJ60 (1981, 3B engine):

sometimes the aircon works and sometimes not.
It can be very hot and when I drive faster it always works but during city driving it is not sufficiently cold anymore.

I cleaned the condenser and when I flush it with cold water the aircon gets also better.
When I switch off the fan and let the whole system cool for some minutes the air comes out very cold again for a while until it gets warmer again.

I have already cleaned the condenser and the blower/evaporator unit with airfilter and isolated the hoses under the hood. against the heat from the exhaust.
I don't have a choke yet to increase the idle for city driving so the aircon could work better when driving stop and go in the city.

When I look at the sight glass on the drier there are no bubbles.

I suspect that I need a new drier and new fill since it seems to be the first drier still.

The more expensive components would be the condenser or, even worse, the compressor.

BTW: I do not have a heater, only the aircon since I live in the Philippines.

What do you think is wrong?

Sounds to me like it under condensing head pressure is to high probably around 350 psi plus your ac may be over charged with refrigerant or condenser in poor condition a thermo fan on the condenser will help

I have a fan for the condenser already and it works, I compared it with a new one in a store, they are not very "windy" and rather slow (compared to the "big" one for the engine. Mine is even faster than in the store.
I was already thinking how to "detour the air from the engine fan to this condenser.

You mean I have too much refrigerant in the system?
Somehow this was also my thought rather than too few, concluding from the repair manual.

Sounds more like you need to have the system recharged. Might be worth while to have it converted over to R134. Take it to a reputable shop and have them test the system.

I will buy a choke this week first, that's the cheapest solution before investing in the aircon system.
My wife said today it worked.

My normal idel is really low at 600, the repair book says with aircon it should be 1000.
600 is great durinf cold days and long distance to keep the usage down but too low for the aircon on hot days with 35°C (almost 100°F).

Aircon? Are you a pinoy?:)

I am German, living in the Philippines.
Not sure, some say a/c, some aircon, what else do you call it?

ohhh gotcha! I just get made fun of all the time here for sayin aircon...but it was what I have been calling it when I grew up in the philippines:D I still call it that today!

Today is a hot day and it worked perfectly.
I cleaned the condenser with WD40 (don't laugh) and flushed it after some hours.
I think I will repeat the procedure again.

Any suggestions for good cleaners?
I think oven cleaner (this acid stuff) might be too aggressive!?
Maybe Palmolive in a sprayer and let work...

I am also thinking about a bigger or a second condenser fan.
I think the fan blows the air ON the condenser and not AWAY like some fans do!?

Sounds more like a sticky TX valve. I'd replace, drier/receiver, tx valve and regas system. No external cleaning of the compressor is going to help the system.

Wie geht es dir mein Freund, wie lange haben sie lebten auf der Insel? did i say that right my friend?I would first try to raise your idle close to were the compressor would engage and have a shop check your pressure readings it is possible that it is overcharge also consider the fact that humidity could drastically affect how cold your aircon performs make sure you still have the fan shroud in order to pull the hot air through your condenser more effective cooling.post some pics of the set up i'm just not too familiar with a bj60.

Hello again,

thanks for the answer.

I am here now for over three years (since October 2008) in Cagayan de Oro City but I do not yet speak Bisaya since everybody talks to me in English so I got lazy learning the language.

I do cleaning on the condenser every second day and it is still dirty.
I was also looking for a choke wire but not yet successful since they all want to sell me a "engine stop" assembly.
Funny thing is that my engine stop is actually a choke and I should just switch both.

I will also check the grounding for the blower since it sometimes seems slower and sometimes faster..
