I’m running a 1978 de-smogged FJ40. Where does the lower intake (hot air?) run to? I see CityRacerLLC sells tubing that connects to it but i can’t find a photo depicting where it leads to?

If it ran to a desmog component, think I should wire it closed?

Thanks!
Sam

A front heat shield on the exhaust manifold had a provision for a tube to the air cleaner assembly. When the air cleaner assembly is cold it could draw hot air from the exterior surface of the exhaust manifold. Once things got warm the air is delivered from the main intake inlet.

there was a piece that attached to the exhaust manifold, then a short tube/hose connected it to the air cleaner housing
when properly working it was just used to intake warm air until the engine warmed up then vacuum switch would close the door in the air cleaner housing and suck in cold air from the grill area

I question the function of the wax temperature sensor in the air cleaner intake. Both, or maybe all three, of mine were shot. I had to hack it into a position by modifying it with a steel wire. Hopefully, that would work, like one setting for summer, one for winter.
