I seem to be having the same problems as everyone else, compresser to small for what I was trying to use it for.. (sand blasting/painting)

So I went the extra mile with it. Got a 1951 propain tank (155 gal.) and welded a top plate to it. I then used a 2 head compresser (from harber fright) prowered by a 6 hp gas motor.

Now I have such a large tank, I have to try to keep ahead of the pressure. So if you have the "room" for sure a compresser, this is for sure the way to go.

I have an older Speedaire 60 gallon horizontal compressor all plumbed and in place with a new 3hp 220 motor. Well it blew up one of the 2 pistons recently... it trashed the camshaft too. The bearing in the other piston is ready to go... I got it for free a long time ago.

I am considering this pump as a replacement:

Ingersoll Rand Single-Stage Compressor Pump — 3 HP, Model# SS3 | Air Compressor Pumps | Northern Tool + Equipment

THis will be for full home shop mode including some painting at some point but mostly for air tools... seems like the 90 psi CFM will be just fine.

Thoughts & opinions welcome.

I have the SS5 and it is holding up well - for around a hundred more you get 8 more cfm.

That's getting out of my price range...

I believe all of the IR pumps are rated with a 100% duty cycle provided you run their synthetic oil. For the money, the IR SS3 should last quite a while and keep up with most air tools - it may have a little trouble keeping up with larger air sanders under constant use but other than that should be good. If you can come up with a little more cash go with the larger SS5 - otherwise get the SS3 and don't look back.
