Anyone ever take the top off of the lid?
Looks like it might be glued in? Would like to take apart so I can get all the rust off.

Hello,

It is welded. Two options.

You can remove rust manually with sand paper and (very carefully) a Dremel. Time and patience are of the essence.

You can also let it soak it on vinegar or Vaseline, when wipe/wash it off. Depending on the mix you use, it can take a while.

Hope this helps.

I blasted mine with glass beads. I should have also used Oxisolve or something like it. Very hard to get at seams in there.

Vinegar actually works remarkably well for removing rust, and it's pretty cheap too. :)

Although there might be minor gaps in the process I would think bead blasting would be your best option.

Over the counter Vinegar?
Is it sold in varying strengths?

i have had great luck with ospho, then spraying it with rustoleum product. do not leave the ospho on painted surfaces for very long, it will eat through the paint. spray, wait 5 min then wipe or dunk in water to neutralize the acid, dry and paint

I'd bead blast it and paint it with VHT caliper paint and then bake it in the oven (when the wife is not around of course). I did my wiper arms and brake packing plates that way and they came out nicely.

Dan, Is it true that VHT caliper paint smells just like Toll House Cookies once the oven heats up? :)

Is there more than one kind of Ospho? I see the Ospho 65 on Amazon and their website says I may be able to get it at Ace.

This is the stuff
Ospho Rust Treatment - Since 1947

I got mine at ace yes, greenish hue to it.

I bought a spray bottle to mist it on, used it to address some of the small rust areas around the door and some other areas, hit it with some clearcoat if you will address it later.

I should add that this is a rust converter... so you still need something to cover it so the cancer doesnt spread

I got the quart and have some left over, looks like this
OSPHO Rust Converter/Metal Primer | West Marine
