I am getting ready for a big trip over the christmas week and was cleaning out a few things in the 80. I took out the air cleaner assembly to change the air filter, clean out the throttle body and took the resonator off, and reconnected everything minus the resonator, so I had enough room for a dual battery set up.

Anyway I was looking at the air assembly and noticed the there was a little flange of metal that looked like it was there to direct air/water/dirt to the little collection bucket. Would taking this out help with better air flow? If it were taken out would a 94 ECM/MAS be able to handle the increased air? Silly question just had to ask.... :o :o

thanks to all and to all a good night

you probably know that when you move air intake things around, it is not a bad idea to ensure that the fat "corrugated" plastic tube going from filter to intake has not become cracked during the ordeal as it may then cause some rough running.

Unfortunately I do. I mean unfortunetly that happened to the 94 I had a few years ago and it put me out $100 or so bucks. My neighbor, who was booted from pirate4x4, said I could fix it with electrical tape    I opted to go to the dealership and pay for one through my nose.

the deflector still leaves a fairly large opening, it may flow slightly more air without it but how much time do you spend at full throttle? the rest of the time the throttle pate is the restriction.

That deflector set's up a swirl in the box that separates a lot of dust and grit via centrifugal force keeping it out of the filter, without it your filter will become clogged sooner, leave it be it is one of the many nice features of the 80 series.

He didn't get booted... more like evicted for lack of payment (or carb work). He screwed some people on carbs, but got screwed himself by PBB'ers a time or two... I ended up paying to ship alot of the carbs back to customers because he was broke...

Ryan, do you think it is approproate to bag on rich considering???

PS. If this isn't about Rich, screw me ;) :D

Back to the original question:

Leave it alone, it is there for a very good reason. You will see no gain by removing it, you will only succeed in screwing up the cyclonic action inside the housing.

"Cyclonic action"... you sound like my Fluid Mechanics professor... ;) I completly agree with CDan, Toyota engineers put it their for a reason, removing it isn't worth the gain (probably not even noticable).

What will happen is the filter will get really dirty in one spot and the "tuna can" won't do it's job properly.

Dan wile we are talking about the tuna can can the rubber flapper in the bottom of it be purchaced seperately? or do I have to get a whole new tuna can? mine was damged by the operator, I would imagine it does not work as good when air is being drawn up through the hole in the bottom

It is part of the can. A new can would be about 10 bucks.

~$10 not bad at all forthe whole can, I'll add it to the list.

Thanks

Yeah,

It comes with the bail-clips too.

what's with the little pot sticking out at the bottom with clips?
that a reservoir for dirt and water?
haven't taken it off yet... better do that and see what's in there...

That's the "tuna can". It is a treasure chest of dirty bits...:D

Oh, OK. Had assumed the tuna can was the big one...
