The stock Michelin LTX tires actually performed pretty well off road. Here I am exploding the front differential with the stock tires

The we got some Toyo Open Country MT's and an ARB front diff.

Nice tires, heavy sidewall, aggressive look, they wore great. Killed the mileage and had a very stiff ride, we discovered we didn't really need that aggressive a tire.

The we got the Michelin LTX A/T2

Not that aggressive but a decent tire for mostly highway and some off road. Still a pretty heavy sidewall a bit softer ride but still better cornering than the stock tires. Good reviews and excellent wear rating on gravel, which is 99% of what we do off road. I'm digging these tires so far.

they already have sipes running across the lugs it appears....are they that bad?

They do quite well but we tend to get some horrific ice in SW Montana, I'm actually considering a set of winter blizzacks for winter use and save these for the 4 months of non snow we see a year.

Can you give me some pointers on load range ratings? - Specifically D vs. E. Keep in mind that I likely will NEVER encounter any snow in South Louisiana. Just saw the 'E' rated 285 75 16s on tire rack for $201/tire (not including shipping - which will be >$100). This site comes pretty highly recommended. Gonna shop around the area, but I'm not sure I can beat the price on the tires....

Thanks for any and all help.

Load Range D are 8 ply tires and Load Range E are 10 ply.

The E's would be tougher, stiffer but the D's will ride better. The OEM tires were probably 6 ply so the D and E are both tougher than the originals.

Think about it this way..... the D's are made for a 3/4 ton pickup but the E's are made for the diesel 3/4 ton and 1 ton pickups. The diesels are much heavier.

We have a ranch in central Texas where everything seems to have thorns. I almost went with E's for the puncture resistance of the 10 ply but ended up buying the D's for the everyday ride quality. I have not been unhappy with my decision. I would go back with D's again if I were purchasing a new set tomorrow.

Good luck.

I had procomp x-all terrains and x-mud terrains on my FJC and 80. Great tires but expensive. If they sold the x-terrains in 295/75/16 I'd buy them today

Welcome fellow baton rougian.

I have and love the BFG ATs. This is them in 295/75r16s on my 100.

This is stock with no lift, never had any rubbing.

Thanks, man. Did you get those BFGs around BR or know of a good place to get 'em?

I got mine through my dads shop as i was able to get a little discount.

I usually get all my tire stuff done at tire kingdom. They usually will price match and are not too expensive.

P.S. check out the Louisiana Land Kreweser section on ih8mud. There are a few FJ Cruiser and Land Cruiser owners in BR, and a good bit more in the New Orleans area.

I personally think the Nitto Terra Grapplers and the Yokohoma Geolanders AT-S look the best for a street AT.

If you want a cross between a Mud tire and an AT the Dick Cepek Fun Country 2's look badass.

With the Duratrac, has anyone noticed a drop in gas mileage after switching to them?

After 3 years of running them, none.

BTW, to the OP, you can get 265/75/16 Duratracs in "C" load range at Tire Rack for <200 each. They run and look great on stock ride height hundys

It seems like duratrac is the popular vote for an AT tire that looks aggressive, performs well off the road, and doesn’t sacrifice on the road performance... at least as of 2012...

although it seems that since 2012 the KO2s have gained popularity. Any othersto be strongly considered?

Go over to the Tires and Wheels forum as they have more direct information. Duratracs are good however they are LOUD at anything above 30mph, like MT tire on the highway LOUD. KO2s have always been popular but have mixed results with quality control. Personally I have nothing but exceptional luck with Cooper's (S/T Maxx on my 60 then AT3 XLTs after the Maxx wore out, HTP on the wife's 4Runner then once those wore out we put AT3 4S on it and they are great as well). Truck I just bought came with practically new Falken Wildpeak AT3W's which have impressed thus far (1500 miles in).

I run the Duratrac and find them to be great (E-Rated) - great wear, excellent on/off road traction, good snow traction
Not impressed at all with the KO2's for Colorado conditions

I'm very happy with my Falken AT3W. I have 265/70/18 in standard load because I was worried about compromising ride quality by going to LTE tires. They are comfortable, have held up to moderate trails with loose rock (no crawling), and have been great in snow, ice, and rain. They are also cheap compared to KO2s.
I'm positive there are better tires out there, but it's a good tire for the price and gives you the aggressive look / performance you want.

I just bought these, so far so good. Only been a few hundred miles, but we have snow and they do a lot better than the Michelin A/T2’s I had, those tires sucked in the snow.
I got them in light truck, online from Walmart, under $600.
