I searched forum but couldn't find anything. What are the best mods to give the GX a more aggressive look? 265 seem to be the max tire.

I'm looking at a 2020 and don't want to lift it. Do I have other options? I was going to try to give it a black line treatment and upgrade the tires. I'd like to remove running boards and cut bumper but want to keep it a little steath. I don't need an off road vehicle but like to go occasionally and would feel like a poser tricking my ride out too much. But I do want to trick out some.

Just looking for some ideas to subtlely differenciate my GX460 from stock soccer mom mobile.

Thanks for the help and hopefully helps future person searching for same thing.

Yup 17” 0 offset wheel and a/t tires looks banger. Will require “some” fender liner massage. Front bumper trim and slider and you have a very good looking setup imo but don’t add excess weight or overkill for a 99% pavement ride.
Also these things have hella traction with the 4wd and suspension so you’ll be fine in anything except rock crawling once you fix the approach angle a bit and do the sliders.

Wheels and tires is the answer. Hell even a set of proper all-terrains can make it look loads better. Here's ours with 32" BFG KO2's on the factory 18's, it's all momma asked for.

For a practical, non-lifted family hauler without the soccer Mom look:
  1. Lose the 18" factory wheels. Get 17" rims and tires. The largest that will fit in your stock spare location in the back. Why? What you'll pay over time for 18" tires, you'll eventually save with the same diameter of 17" tire. Also depending upon what style you choose, it'll have a more off road look. You will have a smoother ride with a taller sidewall.
  2. Replace the running board steps with proper steel rock sliders. Preferably wide enough to get most all your foot on when stepping onto. Why? it'll keep parking lot doors from dinging you and you won't be having to stand on your tippy toes when trying to load things on the rack you'll get below. 2010+ Lexus GX460 Angled Sliders With Grip Top Plate - https://rsgmetalworks.com/collections/2010-lexus-gx460/products/2010-lexus-gx460-angled-sliders-with-grip-top-plate
  3. A decent off road roof rack. Why? It will come in very useful for family camp-outs, road trips, lumber from the local box hardware store, etc. Lexus GX Racks — Gamiviti - https://www.gamiviti.com/gxracks
  4. A receiver insert with a big 'ol D ring. Why? Very handy when you need to pull someone who is stuck and has great off road appeal. Do not EVER try to pull someone stuck using the ball on a receiver hitch. Amazon product ASIN B079FNGH9J

in the same boat! we‘re in the LA and San Gabriel Valley area and most of the time, you’ll find Korean grandpas behind the wheel of GXs! haha wifey hates it! of course we’re Korean and Filipino too!

I’m seeing a few guys running 275/65 on stock 18s without having to do any lift, mods or minor body work. I’d be down for that. But already got a homie passing down some ssw raptors to me (17x9 -12 offset). hoping to try and getting em in no lift…

considered blacking out all the chrome trim and badges?
I got some hyperdip coming in to mess with. have been pretty curious about the product. I’ll probably report on the results

I was hesitant to post this as I've had several FJ-40s and did some rock crawling and lots of mods. Unfortunately, life changes and while I'd still like to get out some I'm probably only doing overlanding stuff now and need a DD. I don't want to admit it but yeah it will be highway 99% of time. Probably take maybe 6-10 offroad outings a year if I'm lucky.

Great suggestions! Sounds like I don't need to get a lift and just upgrade tires and add sliders to start.

I still haven't figured out how to fix the approach angles (other than I'm sure bigger tires will help a little), which is my main concern taking this thing off-road. I guess I'll just need to be careful and if a crack the bumper then that means it's time to replace it.

All of the bumpers I've found seem to be more hardcore than what I would like. I would prefer it to be subtle so you don't know it can go offroad.

This is my favorite so far. Lexus GX460 Covert Front Bumper | 2014-2022 - https://cbioffroadfab.com/product/lexus-gx460-covert-series-front-bumper/

Appreciate all the help. Hopefully helps others that are maybe too shy to admit they aren't cool.

Do we have confirmation on what the biggest 17" tire that will fit in the stock spare location is?

Another interesting (albeit expensive :)) option to improve the front approach angle and make the looks much more aggressive would be a Prado conversion with a TRD-style grille. Some have done it, and it requires souring lots of parts (potentially internationally) and getting paint/body work done. But what you'd end up with would be like nothing else on the road while ditching both the country-club mom vibe of the giant GX grille. I am sure this would be a $10K+ mod for a GX...if I was in the market for a new GX and money was no object, it would be the way I would go.

Some guys find that the CBI Covert bumper makes the grille magnify the predator look, but I for one love it. Personally, I think it is the easiest way to increase your clearance up front while also protecting it and providing for a place to mount a winch. Should we decide to keep our current GX it'll likely get a mild mod treatment at some point and I would elect for the CBI Covert for it.

Sorry, I do not since I hang my spare off the MetalTech rear bumper. But there's been a lot of posts about it.
Everything from the largest that'll fit with letting out all the air, to just being able to stuff an inflated one up there.
They also discuss about large tires and interference with hitches installed.
Best thing is to do a couple of searches and and find a thread that would most follow what you'd like to do.

Apologies for the vague response, but tire size in general is such a vague topic to put an "absolute" on. Even between manufacturers, the same metric size tire will probably have physically different dimensions. Albeit, it may only be by a quarter inch or so, but when trying to squeeze that spare up underneath, a quarter inch and be a go or no-go.

I was able to fit 265/65r18 into the spare location with a curt type III hitch (more clearance than Lexus type IV) and it takes some work to guide it in there. I run 17” methods on my main four but use the stock 18 as my spare, just have to be sure to carry the correct lug nuts.

Those are only 265 in your profile pic? Looks good.

I like @kdub ‘s rig for a good example of stuffed 17” with no lift. He just posted some pics on the 460 pic thread. Nothing but wheels and tires and it looks great to me 👍🏻

No sorry, those are 285/70r 17 but I run a calculatedly undersized spare (aka as big as I could fit). I’m actually going to step down a size to improve drive ability next tire replacement probably have another 25k mi on current set.

There ya go

Usually most 265/70R17s will fit with the 6500lb factory hitch. My Rubitreks did not. They run a little large for that nominal size.

There are hacks to get more clearance: loosen the hitch and sliding it back might gain a few mm. A little judicious grinding can get a few mm. You can swap to one of the 5000lb hitches or remove the hitch entirely. KDSS spacers will drop the sway bar an inch and a half or so. I have yet to try any of those but I'm hoping I can get it in. I go to too many out of the way places to want to go without a spare (arguably where I live is out of the way for most people). And the spare takes up a lot of room in a vehicle that's already kinda cramped for storage.
