Well, looks like Im buying BJ74 this weekend. Lucky to find one already imported into Washington State. I guess my question is, is there someplace I can get an ARB from bumper for it? Also, does anyone make a rear bumper/tire carrier/gas can carrier for it? What about rocker skids? Etc etc etc.

Thank you in advance.

:)

Check our Perkins Performance in Puyallup. I spoke with Jason the owner a few times and he can fabricate and install a fully custom ARB style bumper, sliders, rear swing out tire/can holder for a very reasonable prices. He does custom roll cages and roof racks too.

John at Auburn car repair and off road is an ARB dealer and can get you a ARB bumper.

Thanks YB. Anybody know the four gear ratios of the automatic transmission? I need to calculate ring and pinions for 37" tires and I cant do it without knowing the drive ratios.

Thanks.

37s are you sure you wanna do that. 36s normally considered max for Toyota else diff issues occur

Thank you. Ill think about what I go with. With chromoly axles and some Longfields I wouldnt worry too much running radial tires. Especially with an auto. There is a lot of give in that drivetrain.

If that is a JDM vehicle it will have 4.11 gears in the diffs. It would have been originally equipped with tires just shy of 29 inches tall. To get you back to an effective "stock" ratio with ~37 inch tires you will need 5.29 gears.

I do not have personal experience with tires of that size on stock axles. They are close to 30% taller and of course much heavier than what the vehicle was intended to be shod with. It is possible to break stuff with stock tires. Logic dictates it will be a lot easier (at least 30% I imagine) to break things with very large tires.

What's your opinion of that vehicle with those axles on 37" Goodyear radials? I was thinking chromoly rear axles and some Longfields up front.

Small Thread Hijack...

I was looking at BJ74Guy's avatar, and thinking, man, that is one sweet BJ74. Then, I said to myself... I sure whish I had a BJ74 like that. ;)

Back to regularily scheduled programming.

I do have a BJ74 on 40" tires.... (Right BJ74 guy;)) I've driven, Rubicon, Moab, Dempster Highway, Black Hills, Canol Road... I can probably provide some real world experience. I have stock LC housings, 4.88 gears, Custom 70 series length Longfields, hub gear upgrade, and stock rear axles.

I have broken one birfield and twisted on rear axle shaft. I think the long term, breakage risk comes near 'Inevitable' if you take it offroad. My next truck will have Corporate 14Bolt housings.

Hey Peter, Im the guy who bought those 60 series axles from you years ago! I "Borrowed" your 74 avatar because I always wanted one like that. Im buying the same truck (auto transmission) this weekend. Any chance you can tell me where I can get those custom Longfields and anything else "74" you could suggest?

I was just thinking, arent 5.29s a more natural choice for tires that large?

Good to hear from you again.

If running the stock housings and no cable lockers you dont need custom longfields. 40 series long fields go straight in no problem (maybe a small housing grind)

I have got mates that run 37''s on stock rear ends no problems if built right.

Thank you. They sell 27 and 30 spline versions. What would it take to use the 30 spline units?

Thanks so much Hull. That's what I thought, but its been ten years since Ive been playing this game.. Do you know anyone that makes rocker skids, or rear bumpers for these trucks?

Do most of these trucks have full floater rear ends?

Hi Tom, I thought I recognized your name.

With the H55f, and the boost turned up, I really like the 4.88's with the 40's. Technically, I run Irok 39.5's in the winter, and 12.50R20's (40.7") in the summer. with 18-21 lbs boost, 13B-T makes enough power/gearing to get down the freeway at respectable speeds. I would not want 5.29's.

Now, the auto is a different beast. I also have a 1988 BJ74 with the Auto, as my daily driver. I've really come to hate it. 5.29's might be a better match for the tall OD of the auto.

I got in on a small run of custom 70 series length axles shafts that G&S Cruiser parts ordered up from Longfield in about 2006 or so.

Good luck on with the new truck.

So what does the truck have for lift? You realize you won't fit 37's without doing a SOA lift or trimming front fenders. Even 35's with an OME lift require the front axle to be moved forward an inch for clearance
