Has anyone installed a non factory hood ?

I have a 2000 with hail damage and failing paint on the hood and was looking at getting one of the about 300 buck non factory hoods.

If you have one how was the fit ?
Does it have the window washer holes in it ?
are there any parts I need to buy to install it ? or can I just transfer them from my old hood ?

thanks for any help

I recently purchased a used 99 LX in moderately good condition for a pretty cheap price. The paint was pretty bad on the roof and parts of the bumper (clear coat chipped off and paint faded) but the hood looked very good. After looking through some of the service receipts the owner had the hood replaced (I suspect due to the paint issues listed above.) The new hood looks good, however, at speeds of 75mph+ the hood flexes and ripples quite heavily in the middle towards the windshield.

I suspect that the hood was aftermarket as I cannot find any examples of this issue happening on other 100 series trucks. I haven't looked into reinforcing it but will soon. Just some food for thought.

Also, have you tried looking at junkyards in your area for a hood of the same color? May be a cheaper option.

I've been searching recyclers (junk yards) using search engines that supposedly cover north America. Also Copar, CL, Google & Yahoo search's as well for "Hood" and/or "parting out" along with LX470. I've yet to find a white 057 in my area. I'd like a good used hood and some fill molding for front, as paint should match the best and save me a bundle over cost of OEM new & paint shop. There is some I've found in TX, CA MS, AL, FL & CN as well as rust belt like IL, MI & east coast. Two issue with any of these is that they needed to be shipped: 1) Junk yards make so much money locally they don't want to brother with packing & shipping. 2) I've been warned that shippers will damage hood (without a doubt).

Just not found one advertised locally or within 500 miles..yet. Very few if any in CO junk yards of any color. We just love these rigs so much out here, that they rarely get into yards, I guess. One on CL that is white being part out locally, no longer has any front end pieces or interior. Front end is what generally get these totaled by insurance. Now that price point has come down (sub $12K) we should start seeing more being total with side or rear end impacts, just not around here yet.

I have found a few deals on CL while looking for past 4 months, so not total waste of time. Like a Gary 00 LX470 I picked up for parting out, that turn out to be savable (sweet), and some tires & wheel and headlights. Got one set of LC 16" wheel & caps with two good tires for $75, one set of 18" Tundra wheels, caps, tires (7/32) and sensor for $160 (like new). Also a member sold me a nice set of 20" wheels & tires. I'll not be buying new tire for years to come...LOL

Anyone know of any within 500 miles of Denver please let me know? I'll even buy one for parts take what I need and share the rest. Just needs to be white (057) with clean front end, preferably 98-02 but will buy newer. I'll travel further for right deal.

Your hood may have been damage. Look at crinkle zone half way down each side. If you see any distortion there it's had a front impact. Also feel/press around center of hood as it is close, does the sheet metal flex. Here two examples.

This is the one I'd like to replace. I may take to quality body shop and see what they can do with it. The shop that PO used that did this hack job, is not on my short list

How much for a new one?
Lexus dealer said $950, online new I've seen $600. But then it needs to go to paint shop. Pearl is costly to paint $400 to $750 and difficult to match with older paint (fade). Hit and miss finding good painter to match. So looking $1k to $1,700 new OEM painted may less.

I've not seen any aftermarket LX, only LC.

Used good condition $350 to $550 no paint matching needed.

Very interesting note on that crumple zone. Oddly enough, on the drivers side there is a noticeable dent on the top portion of the hood (visible from the outside) near that area. It looks like someone closed the hood while something was in the bay at that spot. The carfax did show side impact (hit by a motorcycle, door replaced no frame or fender damage) but nothing on front impact. I cant see any other signs of front impact but they may be there and I just don't know what they are. Or perhaps they just repaired the hood and didn't replace it completely. I will have to check that dimple as that may be the reason mine flexes. I was considering putting some metal straps in between the support structures under the hood to make it more rigid, or just leave it since it doesn't appear to be dangerous.

One other thing to consider would be Paint-less dent Repair. Hail damage on the hood would be relatively easy to access and is used pretty frequently down here in insurance claims.

What is the extent of the damage on the paint?

I am not sure whats up with the paint on the hood. Its smooth but there are small whitish circles I would say bubbles but you cant feel them. It kind of looks like when Aluminum oxidizes. I tried buffing on it to get them out and well lets just say I should not have lol. I burned it in one spot.

I am kind of considering just leaving the replacement the flat black it comes in the LC is dark green.

The support structure (skeleton) is most likely bent. The dent you see may be from someone sitting or walking on hood, then tried to pop it back out. Its the skeleton that keeps it from flapping in the wind. Yours may be and easy fix.

Sounds like it was repainted.

I've been holding out for used, but at some point.....
