I'm getting ready to rebuild my front knuckles and replace my worn Birfields. I plan to ad 33'' mabey 35'' tires. I'm sure that I will never be doing any rock crawling mostly trail ridding. Do I need heavy duty birfields (longfileds, Newfields) with stronger axles? or just go with good aftermarket ones, and if so who makes a good aftermarket birfield.

Thanx
George

believe you have two choices.....OEM or Longfields...and the Longfield product is not only stronger, but cheaper as well...

doesn't CV unlimited sell birfs for the 80 still?

I picked one up very cheap off ebay about a year or two ago...it's my trail spare...

I believe Man-A-Fre offers Japanese aftermarket birfs. Might be on backorder though.

Poly Performance also offers birfields (without ABS rings) too....

Just press off the ABS ring you have and put it on the new one.

IIRC, $199.

Do remember that currently the only source for the ABS exciter rings is factory birfs, either new or used. DO NOT discard a toasted factory birf with a good exciter ring. You will regret it later......

Or, one could ostensibly just tear out their ABS system and the all of the associated junk and not worry about it....

:grinpimp:

I suppose one could.

Oh come on guys. I hate to say it on this forum, but what about those like myself who loves this truck but does little off road. I understand what the premium products do, but what about the casual roader who is in the 200k range and does not plan to kick it in the dirt? If I had the $ to do it right maybe the longfields might be the answer. However there is no ABS wheel.

Good grief expand out of your thinking box and lets hear options and or responses from those like myself who is looking for a good....great replacement but more for the road and not the dirt.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

OEM OEM OEM, then again the longfields are cheaper and stronger.

The Dr. has spoken for the "silent majority"...;)

The way I see it, there might be a number of options:

1. Junk yard and try to find a later 80 series birfield with the ABS rings.
2. www.cruiserparts.net has them for IIRC, $199?
3. Try to get them from somone on MUD who upgraded (maybe start a thread in the "Wanted" section)
4. Give www.cvunlimited.com a call and see what they can do for you.
5. ebay might be a place to find some too and get a decent deal...

Either way though, it seems that replacing Birfields are going to be expensive (relatively speaking) because of the importance they have in the overall functioning of the rig.

DR--I'm thinking of upgrading. If I do, you can have mine...ok?

If you don't have any strength needs greater than stock, then the obvious answer is go with what is cheapest.

As a data point, new stockers list for $640.90 a rattle.

longfileds.

FYI the longfileds will not last as long as the Toyota ones

The pros and cons

The pros and cons

Can you please explain this?

My understanding of the Longfields is that they are much stronger than the OEM...hence I assume, they will last longer.

Am I misunderstanding the Longfields one-up on other brands? TIA.

-Spike (How many options do you need? If you have special needs, please post them, otherwise your information has already been posted.)

FWIW,
Mine is a 92 so no abs s***e to deal with, but all you have to do is remove the ring from the stock worn out birf and re attach to the longfeild.
am I missing something?

I'll take the ABS rings off the old ones with no problems and tranfer them to the new ones. Why won't longfields or newfields last as long as Toyota stock if they are stronger? If I have stronger birfs and axles without mod. won't I be moving the point of failure to the diff?

The original Longfields are heat-treated to soften the metal, and thus allow more twist before breakage. The stockers last longer because they are harder but break easier.

This is a moot point for all part time cruisers, and not sure it is an issue with the new longfields that are made from different materials than stock.
