I have read (seemingly) all the AFI threads, but have these questions:

  • Do you need a cable-style throttle pedal to use with this system?
  • Can you use/modify a 2F air cleaner to go on top of the TBI module? If not, what air cleaner works with the AFI setup?
  • Is a '78 electronic distributor all that is needed, as far a distributor?
  • Seems like ordering the longer wiring harness would help get the control module into the glovebox, right?

Hi all,

The swap from the stock mechanical throttle linkage on the Aisin carb to the cable type throttle control of the TBI is pretty easy, just requiring some modifications to the stock gas pedal.

Contact LCWizard here on MUD. He sells a nice adapter for using the stock 2F air filter housing with a GM throttle body.

If AFI says to use the fully electronic distributor that came on some 2Fs then any of the 1978 - 87 versions found in the FJ40/55/60 should work.

I'd ask whether the wiring harness is designed for a SWB or LWB vehicle. Also, where they recommend mounting the ECM.

Good luck,

Alan

Thanks - very helpful info!

adapter air gap

I bought the adapter from AFI TBI to stock air cleaner and I still have about 1/2 inch air gap between the two. Does anyone know if there a rubber gasket available to fill the gap?

TBI stuff you need????

You'll probably want my Landcruiser TBI instruction manual for sure???
You need (might want) my panel to mount ECU inside glove box(mounts upstairs, only have 4 or 5 left, not building more).
You need GM coil and ignition module to work with 1978-87 stock Landcruiser dizzy (which gets modified per instruction sheet).
You need 2 pulse VSS from Stealth Conversions, and a 10" long spedo cable from AA.
You need knock sensor and my mounting bracket (have 2 or 3 left, not building more).
DO NOT attempt the conversion with a 2 piece harness (one that plugs into itself at the firewall). Get a 1 piece harness that goes through the firewall with a rubber grommet (such as Painless #60101). Make sure that every stinking wire in that harness has something to plug into (is actually used). Downey was the first to offer TBI kits for Landcruisers, and we spent the first couple of years trying to cut corners (as everyone else is still doing to date) to save you a few bucks- - - doesn't work, vehicle will have poor drivability until you use everything that GM designed into the system.
You can PM me if you have more questions regarding a Landcruiser TBI conversion.
