Since I’m doing an early 1960s 40 build, I recently picked up an early 40 cowl for its dash. I’ve removed everything but this early “Defrost” dash knob assembly. Need help getting it off so I can remove the whole assembly. Knob has an access hole and small tab access at top cover—no tightening screw and doesn’t appear to be threaded. Here’s the pics of it. Thanks a bunch.

Lmao trust me I want to cut it off but wondering if it real early heater/blower that mounted just under the glove compartment with round vent access outside? I saw a real old fj45 with round vent like that

Pic of the heater? Sounds like you have an aftermarket heater that was getting fresh air from that saws all hack job of a hole.

IIRC on one of my old cars, the dash knob had a spring steel insert that had to be released by poking a small tool into the hole and apply pressure one way or the other to release the knob.
Oof you are giving me flashbacks of having to lay on my back on the drivers floorboard and then contorting myself to reach up into the dash to find that stupid little button to push while still being able to pull the knob. Sometimes they were buried under wiring harnesses and ducting.

When you get it off, post some pic's - please of the locking assembly.
Got er off. Timmyisinthewell was right. I put a small pick in there and the knob came off. Here’s pics and looks like the blower switch is an Indak brand. Plus, I’ve added a pic of that 45 that had that same round vent (circled in red). Our local fj40 parts guy said the round vent was “factory.” Btw, tried to buy that 45 but Howard wouldn’t sell—damn that Howard! Lol

Well done, much better than hacksawing it off. I was working on tearing down a wrecked Bell 204. They ran it out of gas logging in the Amazon. Anyway the guy working with me (an X Boeing inspector) dykes the wire right next to a connector for some tail boom marker light instead of just unplugging it - go figure.

Oh and see it does pay to ask the great collective here.:)
