Is your gas lines steel or are they Gas Tite (yellow flex gas pipe) If they are steel then the nipple should unthead with out twisting up a flex line in the wall. Outdoor gas lines should be galvanized pipe or painted. You should be able to pull that nipple and replace it with galvanized and then install a shut-off. If you think that pipe is solid than just spin off the cap and install a shut-off and then paint the pipe. There are quick connect flex gas lines for grills that allow you to move them around, they have a connection like an air line connection. I'm guessing you know you have to turn off the gas to disconnect the cap. :)

Chances are that cap isn't on that tight.

pretty sure all the lines are solid. All the ones I can see are solid.

So, sounds like several folks think I should just yank on the thing eh?

It's possible that the nipple is very short and the vertical line close inside the wall, in which case I could possibly put in another nipple with dope if the current one would twist loose... still would rather not have to do that
mmm..... :hhmm:

is there an unfinished basement or garage under that outlet? if so try to trace it out- who knows, there could be a valve there. that cap and pipe looks like it's robust enough to unsrew without damage( two pipe wrenches one just keeping the nipple from turning, and the other one unscrewing the cap).. if you can't pin it down if it's gas or not, then just shut off the gas at the house and be prepaired to shut off the water if it turns out to be water. and you'll have to relight all the gass appliances after you restore the gas. you could of course call the gas company- but you'll get no bargin for youre efford and they have the power to lock off youre gas service if they find something wrong- i had it happen to me and it wasn't cheap!

OK, I'm letting myself be influenced...

I've started to PB Blast the thing. Will repeat over the next few days.

I will probably give it a try with a big leverage wrench on the nipple and a little wrench on the cap to try to limit the possibility of twisting the nipple.

Go buy two non sparking brass pipe wrenches.
Trust me they sell them and alot of other brass/bronze tools for haz mat work.
You said you like buying tools.
How about next time you paint the nipple and cap as well with some rustoleum?

Go put your wrenches on there and give it a try. I think you're gonna be surprised at how easy the thing comes apart. Gas lines don't rust like water lines. The pipe dope will have sealed water out of the threads, just as it has sealed the gas in. If the cap doesn't come right off, then start your penetrant applications. And you don't need brass tools unless you plan on beating the cap off.

Quit being such a pussy and start wrenching. I had the same situation when I moved into my house last year. I just used some pipe wrenches and took the cap off. Turn your gas off at the meter first and you will be fine.

Somehow I managed to do mine without a 3 page thread on MUD.

I'll give it a try I think.

thanks for the suggestion, but I think the brass wrenches are overkill for this, frankly. Plus I wonder how well they'd hold up with a too tight steel cap anyway.

another interesting bit of info:
according to some comments I read (who knows...), squirrels have a particular fondness for the plastic hoses that connect to grills. (Maybe the gas smell somehow... Glue-sniffing equivalent for squirrels... :D ?)

Another good reason to have a shutoff valve and to close it each time the grill is not in use... Could have an interesting gas bill if your hose were breached and the gas just flowed out for days or weeks...

Just use your regular god damned pipe wrenches, make sure you are pulling the two wrenches together and take the fawkin cap off. PB blaster won't do s*** but kill your flowers or stain your patio. Household gas pressure is like 1/2 psi. You won't make a spark, the gas will be very diffuse in the environment. Just man up and take it off.

If you position the wrenches correctly, you can use a prybar between the two wrench handles for even more leverage without worrying about twisting the nipple at all.

Dude, you really need to get a buddy nearby who you can trade beer for building trades advice or just sell your house and move into a rental before you kill yourself or your neighbors. These threads are really starting to show a trend of hazardous and ignorant behavior on your part.

Use an angle grinder with a cut off disc on the cap

Start the video prior to starting

I've got Phil's address and phone number if your lawyer needs it later. :D

What he said, 1/2 cap should come off with channel locks. Unless you plan on doing it live you don't have to worry about sparks. PB Blaster won't do anything but make it tougher to paint when your done.

don't worry about squirrels! the lil buggers don't know how to opperate a valve. i think it has something to do with tiny paws, or direction to turn things.clockwise, counter it's all very consusing to their miniscule brains. now what were we talking about, again?

I think the squirrels are getting as frustrated as we are.:meh:

be patient grasshoppers, I'm letting PB do its magic (or placebo effect) before I break out the wrenches...

and fixed my propane grill in the mean time - surgery on the burners with a grinder (what can I say I love my grinders...)- so burgers are live again for now... :)
