What do you guys think a set a locked 80 axles are worth?
Just in case I decide to sell them. ;)

I'm torn between light expedition exploring, and full on Ultimate Adventure (I *may* have submitted my app for 2012 Ultimate Adventure :D).

If you get selected for this, keeping it clean is out the door. It is a blast, but you have to be prepared to sacrifice your truck. You pretty much go where the leader goes, no matter the outcome. We did the UA twice and I can assure you the Toyota axles did not fare so well.

You don't want to be this guy halfway through the event.

and this was the 2nd time we had to replace the front ring and pinion on the event. That was also not a stock 80 front, but a 80 rear diff that is larger.

Bigger axles if you want to do the UA is in order.

And that settles it. Bigger axles it is. I was having second thoughts about tossing in chromo axles/birfs in the stock 80 front axle... That 8" axle just looks a little puny under there.

Thanks for posting that up! I remember seeing your rig on the UA back in '07 or '08? Looks like a blast for sure. I've been following the UA for years!

I've already got a Dana 60 front and a 14b rear. I tend to think that with some CTM u-joints and 35 spline outers, they would be plenty beefy for an 80 series.
What are your thoughts?

I want 1st dibs when you get ready.

Not sure that I would want to ship them, but you've got first dibs.

PM me for more info.

It seams to me that with the 39's and flipped arms you are already heading towards hardcore. Might as well jump in with both feet. And 1 tons are just cool.

Just got back from a week long trip to the gulf. Talked the wife into letting me take the cruiser, and it surpassed all expectations!
This thing really is amazing. Almost 2000 miles without a single issue, drove AWESOME on the highway (between 65-70mph), A/C going the whole time.

Fuel mileage really surprised me. I was budgeting for 10mpg, and wound up getting between 15 and 16mpg on the highway. That's better than it did stock!
That's with factory gears and the tall tires, mileage was figured using GPS and gallons used to fill tank.

This trip really has me thinking about future mods. Whatever I do, I cannot compromise the rig's driveability.

Here are some pics from the trip:

Tim,

Rig looks great. I'm sorry I'm just now finding this thread. Look forward to all your updates. If you need any help wrenching don't hesitate to give a shout.

You mentioned you did away with your rtt on the cruiser. Still have it by chance??? :)

Awesome job. Love everything about it, and I'm heading this direction if I can find one as clean. In Tulsa, so if one crosses your path just like yours, let me know.

Looking forward to seeing the direction you choose for axles.

I wasn't aware the 80 axles were thought of as small or not sturdy. In fact I thought it was the opposite. What is the negative commentary referring to when discussing taking the 80 on UA?

Probably extreme wheeling that maybe 2% of folks here do.

If you haven't already done it, add a skid plate and and one of Slee's air conditioner dryer plates. I'd leave the flares on but that is just a personal preference for the look. If you want to add tubing, you can protect your flares with the tubing. I may eventually do just that.

Not much of an update, but I did get to test out my high-idle controller. Worked great for keeping the revs up when using the winch. I hope to get some time this week to work on my roof rack some more.

Just got the phone call... I'm in the final 12 to be picked for Ultimate Adventure!

That just prioritized my mod list for me. Updates to follow soon.
