Is it a PITA to rebuild the adjusters?

No, piece of cake.
The best trick I learned for those adjusters was to use Anti-Seize between the outer surface of the adjuster and the cup in the slave that it rotates in. Also anti-seize on the threaded bits of course. After that, all my adjusters turned smoothly and precisely and made adjustments much easier.
 
Somebody might have swapped the cylinders or adjusters to the wrong side If they loosen.
