Adding a Pertronix to a 2F

I added a pertronix (engine not running yet) on my 64 F motor and intend to use the stock coil. I have new wires and spark plugs. My main goal was to eliminate points, not necessarily improve performance. Should I go to the pertronix flamethrower coil as well?

If I am not mistaken, I think you can eliminate the ballast resistor for the Pertronix install. I know I did with mine, but I have the MSD box in the system. maybe something to look into before you try firing it up and you run into issues. I am sure someone here will have a more positive answer other than my speculation on just the Pertronix install.

Smart move. Expensive and fancy ignitions do not improve performance or fuel economy. As long as the ignition makes a spark at the right time it is all the same.

You may need a fancy expensive ignition for a high RPM, high compression supercharged racing engine, but not for a tractor motor, like the 2F. Putting a fancy ignition on a 2F is like putting a racing saddle on a mule. It may fit, but it isn't going to run any better. It will empty your wallet quickly.

They do however eliminate points, which may be a good thing in the city, but not so good if it fails on the trail. Carry spares of anyting that is critical for getting home.
 
Actually, installing non contact electronics like pertronix usually improves performance because most distributors have some amount of play in the shaft. This translates to variations in the point opening. Then there is wear in the point contacts, and the material rubbing the cam. If everything is new, usually not much gain but the electronic systems give the right spark, at the right time, even with small issues. That is why the industry now only uses this method. Points were the only way back in the day.
 
Pertronix dizzy cross reference

Here's a table of Nippondenso dizzy's and matching pertronix Ignitor II's. Distributor part number is on the plate on the side.

Been thinking about adding a Pertronix to my 2F. I have a 2F with the smaller distributor cap - does anyone know which part number that is so I can get the correct one? Seems most of the 2F dizzy's have the larger cap...

hiya,

i know when I dropped one into my pig a few years ago, I could immediately tell the engine was running smoother. I guess the cruiser electronic ignition would be better but what I've got is pretty good. ty :beer:
