Looking to see what people have done for add on back up lights.

I prefer a single light
Not roof rack mounted (don't have one)
Best is without an external tire carrier - just a stock truck...
I've seen one flush mounted into the tailgate
I had one bolted to the top of the bumper under the turn signals...

looking for other ideas AND looking for recommendations on really W-I-D-E beam lights.

Thanks,
mark

I am looking for the same solution.

I am considering one of these on the bumper corner.

I know it's not an external light, but another option for ya!

CREE 7W LED 1156 lights.

CREE on left in both photos.

These made a big difference for me.

i flush mounted my crap walmart lights to the metal toyota badge on the tailget next to the license plate lights. i bought some $20 off road lights from napa that a friend reccomneded to replace the current ones. worked well for the dipstick tailgaters who had their hibeams on when i wasnt going fast enough. they quickly turned off their hi beams when they couldnt see

What's the website where those cree back up lights came from or was it from the guy that was on here a while back? Refresh my memory please.

I went CREE and they are amazing. I wouldn't even consider an additional light at this point. I bought them from a mud vendor.

I use OE fog lights sourced from the junkyard. Since I already pull a heavy gauge wire from a breaker at the battery all the way to the rear bumper I tap into that for power and trigger the fog light's relay off the reverse light wire. Usually one fog light is enough.

Not sure how hot the LED's run, but the PO of my Mini heat-distorted the reverse lenses with higher wattage incandescent bulbs. I wouldn't expect that same from the LED's but I would suggest keeping an eye on that.

I mounted these up and they work well. Not led's, but I don't have them on for very long. I also wired them so they come on with my stock reverse lights through a relay, but also has a switch on the dash so I can turn these off and have stock reverse lights so I don't blind people around town.

Easy to do and only cost around $30.00

Just another idea and they mount out of the way.

Are these any special brand? They fit nicely and they look "right".

I got my CREE lights from "FullyLitLED" on this forum. Another LED vendor is pfran (don't know the exact username)

It's a good upgrade.

Nothing wrong with external lights like Doug did though.

I got paul's (pfran42). he's in the vender section. he also has some really great LED dome lights. They are super easy to install and are bright as hell!!

Bought them a Kragen I think, but I have seen similar ones at most parts stores. Around $20 for lights + relay, so under $30.00 total.

It is a sad state of affairs when folks here feel they have to cover their license plate in a photo. Not suggesting they should not.

I understand, of course, which is why I cover mine when driving ;)

I put both a spotlight for backing up and two more brake/turn/tail lights on my roof rack. At least they are out of the way from boobs in parking lots.

The two additional turn/brake/tail lights are for winter when the OEM lights are encrusted with snow/ice and my white 60 is hard to see on the road. Had a few close calls- near rear end collisions.

Sooner or later, a roof rack comes in handy.

The $5 solution...

Acquire one Sylvania 12v 50w flood bulb (Ace, HD, Lowes, the light bulb aisle at the supermarket, the track lights in your neighbor's family room...). Cut appropriately sized hole in lens with hole saw. Install bulb with silisnot.

Take one used back up light bulb. Crush glass, pull out filament with pliers, poke hole through ceramic base with small screwdriver. Attach two short sections of wire, one set in a blob of solder at the center bottom (the +ive contact) and one soldered to the metal shell (the -ive contact). Attach female spade connectors to wires.

Plug bulb base into back up light bulb socket. Plug spade connectors to pins on 50w bulb (crimp 'em a bit with pliers). Install lens.

Presto! 95% of the power of a low beam headlamp pointing out to the back 40. Or at the 40 out back. Whatever.

I like that setup, very clean. And cheap enough I might actually consider it!

I went the cree route from JLClighting. Awesome brightness and not real mods involved. I had a hella 6" all lined up to throw back there but now theres no need.
