My FIL has a 2006 lc and today he showed me that when he turns the air conditioner on a humming sound can easily be heard from the passenger floor board.

Any idears?

Thanks

Do you hear it at any speed? It can be the blower motor. the motor can be seen under the pass. side dash.

is it constant, or intermittent?

I looked to see where it was coming from and while i was there the sound was constant while the A/C was on.

There was a fan (directly above where the passenger's feet would be) in there of some sort and its entirely possible that the fan was the source of the sound.

He said it has never made that sound before.

Another puzzle piece:

My FIL also said there was what appeared to be insulation that apparently fell to the passenger floor board.

Anybody got a suggestion?

It's probably debris (falling in intake or rodents bringing it in) in the blower motor or internals on motor wore out. Pull out the cabin air filter, check for debris, pull the blower motor (3-4 bolts and it should drop out), check for debris. Re-install, if noise still present, replace blower motor.

My observation was that the noise (once the AC was engaged) was coming from the fan.

My problem is i dont know what function that fan serves or if the noise indicates that the fan is bad and needs replaced.

I think mine sucked up a piece of paper off the top of a pack of cigarettes and now it's making a humming / clicking noise. Now I know which part to take off to diagnose.

Update! Fan motor removed and it appeared a critter built a nest using insulation!

He said its working fine after the insulation was removed.
