When I turn on the AC, the engine revs up higher, is that normal its like I am pushing down on the accelerator and even the idle is running much higher than when off. Is this normal?

my 88 does the same... there's a slight idle up when you hit the a/c button - maybe only a couple hundred rpm's (ish)

since this is an AC thread - I'll chime in...my 88 FJ62 has always blown nice cold air out the vents...until yesterday...and godsdammitall - it would of course happen on the day Portland hits 98 degrees and I'm picking my mom up from the airport in sweltering stop N go traffic.

the a/c still blows somewhat cool - but simply couldnt keep up. thankfully there's an a/c shop in SE portland that can charge R12.

On the FJ60 the idle is supposed to speed up a bit when the AC is running. It helps the compressor cool faster and probably more importantly, it speeds up the radiator fan to help cool the condenser and radiator more effectively.
There's an adjustment screw on the carburetor that lets you set the speed.
1100-1200 rpm would be good.

@OSS , I noticed the other day that on occasion my idle doesnt go up when the AC goes on unless I give the gas pedal a little tappy tap. What do you think could be cause that? Its not all the time.

@Jasonredwood

You may have a tiny leak somewhere in the AC idle up system so it takes a rush of vacuum to operate the actuator diaphragm... or perhaps, the Idle Up Valve (solenoid) is sticky?
