My 88 FJ62 transmission began slipping and knowing that others have unsuccessfully tried to rebuild theirs, I decided to give it a shot. I purchased to 36264E FSM specifically for the A440F. It was very important. I purchased a Transtar full rebuild kit. I also sent the Torque Converter (TC) out to be remanufactured. The internal rebuild was straight forward. The Valve Body (VB) was tedious but doable. Once everything was reassembled here are my results:
Low Gear & Reverse – These work better than ever. They go into gear quickly and the pressure builds immediately and the cruiser will move up and back on the road.
2nd Gear – Initially this seemed to be the same as Low Gear, pressures build immediately and the cruiser would move forward. But for some reason now something feels locked. I am not sure what happed to become locked.
3rd & Drive – These do not seem to work at all. There is no feeling of pressure being built-up like in Low & Reverse. There is some slight movement but not very much.
I have had some conversations with others and their feelings are that I still have issues with the VB. I have also heard that I should replace the VB springs. These are supposed to be key in creating the correct balance of pressure. Any suggestions?
I believe because Low and Reverse seem to be working correctly the oil pump and TC are working correctly. Is this a fair assumption?
I would appreciate any guidance or suggestion that will help me get my cruiser back on the road.
Thanks for your help.
Best regards,
Keith
