Hi Gang,

Page AT27 of the Chassis & Body manual mentions disconnecting the "oil cooler tubes" when removing the A440 transmission.

Is anyone familiar with the stock set up on these? Do those tubes run through to the rad to cool the ATF?

I had planned to install a tranny cooler. However, if the stock set up is sufficient, then I will spend my money on something else on my "list".

I put a AT cooler in for about $40 , I think it was money well spent.
All you need is a cooler(scrapyard) and a hose and some fittings and a couple bolts and a bracket....voila

Hi Robert,

Yes. I know its a simple and inexpensive set up. But I won't bother if the vehicle already has one.

The oil cooler is on the bottom of the radiator
Most people add an additional cooler in front of the radiator
It helps when pulling trailers or mine comes in handy when climbing up and down muddy mountains.

I have had a 62 series with the 440 as well as my BJ74, I have yet to ever see the tranny temp light come on and have never had a problem with tranny heat. I would leave it alone and run with the stock setup. JMHO

Hey Wayne speaking of Cruisers, can I get NEW PTO Winch covers? are they reasonably priced?

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Bruce:

I think I mentioned last time we talked that a lot of the manufacturers run a tranny line to the bottom of the rad to cool off the ATF.

I had a Pathfinder that bruned two auto transmissions, and that was expensive. Even though the factory setup will most likely last a long time, I think it's realtively inexpesive insurance to get a good quality oil cooler and put it on your BJ74. They're easy to install, and could very well extend the life of your auto.

My 2 cents.

part number 38286-60100
not sure of the price.
cheers

Hey Wayne, could not find the part # US or Canada, however Canada did have the part # as 38286-60010. Here is the interesting thing the list price for the winch cover is listed as $807.30 CAN.....I told them unless that cover comes with a winch I think I will pass on the cover, they concured and thought it was pretty bizzare themselves.

Cheers,

Michael

try 38286-60110 since that is the change up and from there it goes to 38286-60111.
i tried the number you posted with no response...
cheers

Hi Bruce...bringing this back up front the depths...

Don't know if you have dealth with this already, however I have been reading up lately on LC auto's and transmission coolers and thought you might find this interesting. There is some great reading in the 3FE archives at Birfield. Rodney from Wholesale Automatics of Oz has quite a few posts giving advice.

The stock cooler at the bottom of the rad works to both cool and heat the ATF.

Below is a blurb about the latest style of ATF coolers.

"Tru-Cool" self regulating coolers - it's the oil that regulates the cooler. That is the principle behind the revolutionary new TRU-COOL SR series of self-regulating transmission oil coolers. Thicker oil that is below the ideal operating temperature bypasses the cooler through the upper two plates. When the temperature rises, it becomes thin enough to pass through the entire cooler and receive TRU-COOL's superior heat transfer efficiently, automatically."

Seems running a cooler such as this is highly recommended, as it is cheap insurance, and will only activate when required, so overcooling the ATF is not a concern (here is where the stock cooler in the rad comes in handy as well).

after seeing what a auto costs to rebuild, i would suggest to anyone that abuses or tows with his auto to add an auxilerly cooler.
also, with the 12HT do not drive in OD below 80 k/h, the lock up torque converters are being torn out. might be a good idea with the 13BT as well.
at about 65 k/h the lock up is searching constantly going in and out of lock up...
just my 2 cents on the matter.
cheers

Or this...and a cooler...:D

Thanks Greg & Wayne. I have not looked further at a cooler for my BJ74. Been spending on other things. But soon.

Greg,

Any progress on that Extreme Valve Body for your GF? The Tru Cool Max price I've seen is about $120 US. Have you seen a Canadian price & if so where?

Thanks,

Bruce
