A way to save the cats?

I had no idea my LC had to pass a emission's test. How do I go about that? While I was looking for information on it I found this... http://www.passsmogtests.com/ and this http://how-to-pass-smog-test.rxp.com/. Not that I'm endorsing or even would use. But I thought it was funny. Reminds me of those things for drug tests. So how do I make sure my LC will pass test and do ALL States have them (emission test)? Is there a Site I can goto, to find out all this info.

Eric-Am I understanding this right? You have perfectly good cats, you passed smog, and you are worried about aftermarket catylitic converters? Run them and be happy. When they die, buy some new ones.

I think you need somemore stuff to worry about. How about paintless dent removal... before you get dents? How about the heartbreak of aluminium oxidation on the aluminium rims? Maybe you need fan belt polishing compound? I forsee a long and sleepless night-just like me. Just yanking your chain Eric, it will be many years before your cats are a real issue.

thanks Andrew, but no, the car that passed is not my LC. I have no idea if my cats are good or not. But I'm taken aback at the notion that it would take $1K (or is that $2K?) to replace the dang things if they were to go bad. And it annoys me if that is the result of ballooning administrative nonsense. So I was just musing on possible creative preemptive solutions....

But then, of course, if they can't be modified by law, I won't modify them...

i will be in the same boat myself end of this year.. have to get emissions inspection in November..so this summer i'll either have to check junkyards for some cats or get some rebuilt ones...also replace either the exhaust manifold cause i have a leak up front...any reason why a sequoia or 4runner cats wouldn't work on the 80...maybe some fabrication and they would fit ?

$2k is alot.. hopefully i can get away w/the KCC cats at $200/each...

Manufacturer's cats are usually very purpose built to the vehicle in terms of size and sometimes design. They want to put the minimum amount of cash into each one so they look at the numbers coming out of the motor and match the cat to those numbers. Although a CAT from another vehicle may work fine, it may be too small as well. Aftermarket CATs are sold in a number of configurations based on the size of the motor. They are usually slightly oversized to make sure the final exhaust numbers are ok. The downside is that they have a reputation of not lasting very long so you may have to replace after only five years.

The same may or may not be true of the KCC rebuilds. Who can really tell how much platinum, rhodium and/or palladium actually goes back into the cat? They may only last five years too, but at the price difference I'll run the KCC cats before I go plunk down the cash for new OEM.

BTW, as the headers are attached to the cat, when you get KCC rebuilds you also get the header. If you've got leaks, etc. this may be beneficial.

Check your state's Department of Motor Vehicles. Not all states have them but many do these days, even if it's just a visual inspection. It's another revenue stream for the gov. as well...

How do we know if a certain vehicle is OBD-II or not? When I lived in LA, I replaced the OEM cat on my old 4runner w/ a 2 1/4" Car Sounds cat (a CA-smog compliant cat) and CARB-approved cam and header. I moved out of state before I had to smog it again (2 yr intervals). All I know is, it easily passes Arizona emissions. Forgot to mention the engine is a 22rec, which was the CA smog approved one back in '86. I think back then, they sold a non-CA version for the rest of the country.

Post-1994 LCs are ODB II

I spoke with a tech rep from a high performance exhaust company here in southern CA that also manufactures aftermarket and OEM direct fit cats. On their website theyindicated that they were the only aftermarket manufacturer that had OBDII, CARB complient cats. So the response from their tech dept was that once they make a direct fit OEM cat, like for the LC or Tacoma, they send it off to CARB for testing and then approval. According to the tech that was over 5 years ago. They do have ones for some GM and Ford products in 2.5" and 3" input/output diameters that do have the CARB seal of approval and are for OBDII vehicles.

So Todd's remark that there is NO Toyota CARB complient, OBDII Non-OEM cat is absolutely correct. Eric, start applying for that line of credit with Toyota for those cats!

On a side note, I use my truck during work as a field biologist and the underside is typically covered in dirt. I also have Hanna's sliders which have that big cat skid plate. At any rate, when I just got my truck smogged here in southern CA the tech walked over the PS of the truck to do the visual inspection of the cats, started to crouch down, then stood up half-laughing. I think he trusted the tailpipe sniffer to catch any discrepencies on mine at least because I know he couldn't have seen any part of the exhaust.

Hi all, I just passed my test a few weeks ago here in PRK. The tech who did mine did not look under the vehicle at all. I do believe that the state, i.e. our tax dollars that we don't have, helps out for smog compliance financially not sure what the are requirements though. This sound like a plane to get us into hydrogen powered hybred hummers. That said this also sound like a good business opportunity too.
Later, Cliff
