A few days ago, a buddy of mine in a local Land Rover club called and wanted to know if I wanted to go wheeling. I said yes and he told me I'd be the only non-Rover there - did I mind? After a cynical chuckle, I accepted and we set it up.
Preface this with the fact that I've owned a Defender 90 and a 4.6 HSE Range Rover so I am familiar with LR's and so is my wallet. I've spent lots of time and $$ at the dealer for repairs in the past...
My next choice was to take my 100 or 80 series cruiser. Both are bone stock and the economist in me went with the lower valued vehicle. So, I took the 80 and it does not have front or rear lockers.
We went to Uwharrie National Forest to play on the OHV trail system. Turns out only 3 Disco's (as they affectionately call them) showed up. None of them were stock and had mild lifts with more aggressive all terrain tires (than my LTX's anyway).
We started on the easiest trails and went from there. They're nice guys, I've known 1 of them for a long time, but they were almost condescending towards the 80 and where it might not be able to go. Pretty comical...
Don't get me wrong, I am only mildly experienced with wheeling and don't have a problem swallowing my pride and admitting a trail is beyond my truck's or my capability.
Bottom line, my 80, bone stock, no front or rear lockers, I am not even sure my center diff is locking in 4wd low, went everywhere the Disco's did without effort. The running boards were a pain at times and yes the trailer hitch got a solid workout dragging and bumping in some steep sections.
Just wanted to let all the rabid fans of this vehicle (like myself) know that even a stock 80 without lockers is VERY capable (no surprise to anyone but it always helps to hear actual accounts). I'd love to have the front and rear lockers and am working on that with another 80.
Question: My idiot lights on the dash (ABS and flashing diff light) do not come on when I put the truck in 4 low. I have the common D light out so when I bought it, I thought that might be the culprit - burned out bulbs. Now I am not so sure. Of course, my local dealer who did the pre-purchase inspection verified the center diff lock worked but I'm fairly certain that was beyond their technical acumen.
1. What is an easy way to test if my center diff lock is working / engaging?
2. If it is not working, what could the problem / fix?
Thanks!
