Hey ya all!

I am a mechanic for a tour company in Mob, UT that specifically runs the FJ80. I know this is the 4Runner side!

What I need from some of you is your opinion of the 4Runner as in off road applications.

Also if any of you are going to be coming through town any time soon and have modified your Runners for heavy trail use, please stop by so we can talk! Show me your rig!

We are looking to get away from the FJ80 due to lack of availability and harder and harder parts to find and rising cost of everything.

Many thanks!

I recently (3 weeks ago) picked up an '19 SR5. I have had experience with 4WD from Subaru Brats (I KNOW!) to Jeeps. In my 30+ years of experience, Toys are the best! We jokingly refer to my wife's 4Runner as a "mini cruiser". Last weekend, we installed side rails on hers. While under there, I was surprised at how "rhino" the vehicle was. Size was comparable with later model TLCs=very comparable with earlier 4WD P/Us. I'd say it compares favorably with FJ40s. Little experience with the V6 but the Nissan V6 (slightly less horsepower) has plenty of pick-up & go (We've had two). The third row seating allows for good cargo space and additional passengers.

I would suggest better tires, change the shocks (I prefer Rancho but Old Man Emu has a good reputation), a brush guard and (if you think it needs it), a winch.

PS: A "Jeep Rescue Team" sticker is mandatory!

PPS: My rig is a '69 FJ40.

I will make it short, i have owned a 2nd Gen. a 3rd Gen. and a 4th Gen. (V8) i still have the 3rd and 4th Gen. and would keep it till it falls apart my 4th gen. is pushing 300k and my 3rd. gen is 370k when i drop it off with my daughter in North Carolina drove it from Cali across the state. Hope this helps in your decision.
