It's illegal to vent the refrigerant into the atmosphere. That said, if you "accidentally" remove a wrong bolt/fitting or screw on a bleeder to the wrong port and no EPA officials are around, you probably wouldn't have any issues. I "know a guy" that's "accidentally" done this a few times when removing A/C gear.

^ Well said. If refrigerant does accidentally get discharged it is a good idea to open the garage door. Not sure how bad it is to breathe in but it does smell funny.
 
I tried having an "accident" on my hdj79 when I needed to move aircon lines to fit an intercooler and ended up with green dye everywhere. Called the local auto repair center and they pulled it all out for me and gave me a discount when I went back to get it regassed (used the gas they pulled out).

Interesting. I opened it up and it’s taken apart
 
If you know the gas is r134a it's not toxic. It's used in some asthma inhalers as propellant. Also freeze spray and computer duster etc. I wouldn't want to breathe any other types of freon though.
