13bt water pump removal

Folks on my 1986,BJ 71 doing maintenance and was replacing water pump…. How the heck do I get it out?
All bolts removed and hoses…. Vertically goes up but then stops.

Any tricks or tips folks may know?

Help appreciated.

Replacing it... that's another fun game - my advantage is my engine is out at the moment!

Folks quick update, removed 2 of the power steering bolts, third one was loose.
Then I was able to pry pump towards outside and allowed the pump to come out.
Also removed the thermostat housing upper and lower.

I will say, it was tough but the bolts on PS and the thermostat housing made it easier.

@Clutchee I am in the exact same situation as you were, struggling to remove water pump on 13BT engine in my BJ71.

Any chance you took photos of the power steering bolts you needed to remove? I am trying to locate them but this is first time doing this on 13BT and having some trouble orienting myself? This isn't my forte ...

Glad to help…. Look at circle.
Where this mount is, behind it is 3 bolts holding it to the block. I took 2 fully out and left one still threaded but very loose.

Here’s the gasket on my 13BT water pump I removed yesterday. Anyone have comment on the condition and if this would cause issues? I’m pretty clueless honestly … I see a tear through it but have to assume it was done while removing it. Certainly looks crappy and will replace with new one. But is this condition look like it failed?

Looks kind of like it failed. Is it a metal gasket?

I just replaced my water pump, it was only 5 years old, it looked pretty bad between the pump and gasket. However it looked pretty clean where the gasket seals so…

The back side of the gasket has no rust so it’s hard to tell but I’m pretty sure my leak was coming from another place.

Also adding, I was able to pull the water pump just fine without removing the thermostat housing. You just have to take the far right heater hose fitting off the waterpump, and take the bolts out of the power steering pump. Also take the nut off the heater pipe that’s attached to the intake. Gives you room to pull it.

You have to remove/reuse that fitting anyway.

Thanks! It’s an old paper gasket but I have a new Toyota one to install. It is a pain to pull it for sure. Yes I had to pull the power steering bolts too. Next time I have to do this it will be easy… sounds like if your experience is typical, there will be a next time. Ha ha.

Yes Toyota should be a metal one. I don’t think failures are very common. I had an alternator bracket break, causing more belt wobble.

I’m still not convinced my water pump was leaking, but since I pulled it all apart, for $120.00 it was just kinda easier to do it and not worry.
