I'm assuming mine will end up at a radiator shop for repair, think I took a stone that damaged the condenser. I'm sure it'll be in the $100's :frown:

Looking for a replacement that may be cheaper...

man, this place is great. my apologies if this is a thread jack (and/or a stupid question) but if it takes four cans of R12 does that mean it also takes four cans of R134A? and what's a decent price for one can of R134A (I paid something like $17 at Napa for one).

When you say R12 is that the same as HC-12a?

no. HC-12a is the new standard. it is cheaper and more enviro friendly

Nope, referring to the old Freon R12

I think the FSM indicates between 1.4 and 1.7lbs is the specified amount for an empty system. It also states to add .9lbs extra. I just had mine charged after flushing the evap. and replacing the TXV and filter/dryer. I didn't know you could still buy R12 without a licence, but if you can, you may also want to invest in a set of gauges! Its a good idea to gain a good understanding of how the whole thing works because you can end up chasing your tail in circles, spending lots of $$$, and still pumping out warm air!

WooHoo! I've got 46 degrees pumping out of mine!

A friend repaired it for free while I was working on my new front grille in his shop. ;)

Yes Toadhopper is right about the FSM which should be adhered to. If you want it to work you have to flush it first otherwise you may end up overfilling it and it won't work because it can't be compressed which is what was wrong with mine.

Mine wasn't leaking, it was overfilled to 6lbs!

Now to visit the shop that overcharged my system.

Just got my AC fixed today: Cruiser mechanic next door to my shop replaced all the O-rings & gaskets & evacuated the system. It held vacuum for 4 hours, so he added about 1 oz of oil & 2 6oz cans of HC-12a. Holds 30 degrees at idle, & hit 21 on the street where it was about 85.

HC-12a is $8/can from foxtoolsupply.com

I thought you are not supposed to put oil in an R12 system. Then again what do I know?

Brrr, careful where you direct that cold air Steve!

I thought 46 degrees was good, you can make your own ice cubes :D
