I have an 88 4Runner, 22RE, fuel injection, all stock.

Problem is the A/C will not cool. Compressor will not engage, probably due to low pressure in the system (fan is on). Can not see any bubbles or fluid movement in the dryer sight glass. I can jumper the compressor clutch and that works fine, still no decrease in air temp when ran that way.

So, I went to fill the system. Had to get an adapter to put the R-134 into it. The adapter can be screwed onto the low pressure fitting, BUT, the quick disconnect fitting from the charge system can not be connected to the new fitting. Right size, fits the adapter, there just is no room to get the quick disconnect under the EFI ducting to get it attached.

Does anyone have a trick to charge the system, or know where I can get a 90 degree adapter (nothing like that here at the local "auto parts" stores)??? Vehicle is not licensed for the street, so taking it to a service shop would be a pain.

Thanks,
Jerry D.

I have an 87' and it runs R-12. There is no compatability with 134 and r-12, unless you change the metering device or orficein the system. The system will also need all the oil drained and then pumped under vacuum for a peroid of time. If you lose vacuun it leaks. There are supposed to be compatable eviron. friendly replacement refrigerents available. I bought some at a carlise car show last year. I've not used it yet, so I don't know how well it works, but I'll try and write down the info this weekend. BTW, It's been 15 years since I was in refer-school so things have changed alot, back then nothing worked with R-12 but R-12. Good luck

I went out to a Napa store in an adjoining town today and they had a 90 deg. adapter for the low pressure fill fitting of the A/C. To install, you need to remove the "Schrader” valve from the LP fitting, and then screw on the adapter. It seals on to the top of the original LP fitting.
So now I can get the charge hose/connection on and see about getting the A/C system going, right after I replace the HP hose which is cracked…

The Napa part number for the 90 deg. adapter is 409909…

Hopefully – problem solved.

F-junker is right. The old lube will not work with the R134a. You've gotta convert the whole system (oil, seals, etc.) to use R134a. It's an HFC, not a CFC, and the Hydrogen atom does not bond as well as the Chlorine. For more info, you may want to call Keith Hollomon of A-Air in Port Orange, FL (386-763-1561). He's a great guy who builds one hell of a compressor. Tell him Jon Boston thought he might be able to answer your questions. He might also be able to sell you the seal kit of refer you to someone who can. (I'm not sure, I'm out of the A/C compressor business now, and haven't talked to him in over a year.)

The problem is that you're using 134 on a system never designed to run those pressures. So you will likely have many more problems in the long run. For that reason, and you can certainly do your own research, I think you're better off to convert to something like Redtec, which cools slightly better than R12 and is fully compatible with your current system. A/C systems are complex and can get very expensive to troubleshoot and repair, a problem exacerbated by putting 134 into an R12 system. It may, however, work for a short time, which might be all you're looking for.

I think you meant Redtek.

Regardless, I don't think I believe that...
