Front driver side looks like clip came off axel shaft and allowed shaft to strip. Looking for any links to tare down and remove front axel to replace. Worth trying or take to dealer? Thanks, Chris
 
Getting the CV out isn't difficult, but can take awhile if you've never torn into a hub assembly. The first half of it is similar to an 80 series, they have great write ups with pictures on getting the hub and rotor assembly off. For the next leg, removing the axle, I haven't seen a really good write up with pics in our FAQ, but it looks pretty straightforward - take off what you need to free up the CV assembly. That whole thing comes out in one piece.

How on earth did the c-clip come out? There's no room in there for it to back off really, and where would it go?
 
When I removed the dust cap the ring was laying in it. I have an 80 series as well and have worked on straight axels many times, but this is the first time messing with the CV. Is the axel held in the third member by another c-clip? Is so how does the axel come out?

There is a positioning circlip on the diff side of the CV also. You have to remove the steering knuckle to be able to remove the CV axle; once the steering knuckle is out a yank is all that is needed to get the CV out. You probably already know this but if you don't want to drain your front diff just jack and support the side you are removing so that it is higher than the diff fluid level...
 
Did you all know there are 6 different thicknesses of "C"-clips for the end of the CV? Does any one know how to determine which one to use? I would guess you adjust the end play as to set so many thousands with a dial indicator?
