1086 BJ70 Alternator troubles. Repaired once but failed as one of the diodes apperently had solder dropped on it? Second repair sent to 4x4 auto Edmonton....good guys there. Because the stater was fried had to be shipped to Boston to be reworked. So the alternator came back and every so often voltmeter would drop and lights would come on indicating no charging. This has been going on for about a month. So one day it charges, one day it doesn't (usually multilple times when driving). Always need rpms to charge at optimal level otherwise voltmeter drops down. Lights radio and heater cause the voltmeter to also drop. Changed voltage regulator...no change...changed batteries and cables.....no change. After last episode of lights coming on I have had it and it goes back to 4 wheel auto for review......very frustrating. Any thoughts?

Repairing 25-30 year old alternators is always going to be hit and miss. If you can find someone who can do the job,you still have to cope with other components that are on their last legs.
I get my wallet and buy new.
Lots of quality alts coming from China and other parts of SE Asia these days.
The one in my 75 series copes well loaded up with 3 large batteries and 2 12 v fridge freezers.

Is this a 24v job?

Need to know if it's 24V or 12V and if it's an internally regulated unit or an externally regulated unit - the country the vehicle was sold determines this in some cases due to the spec that was sold in various countries.

The idiot lights in the dash on some models are controlled by a charge lamp relay, and it could either be the relay, a bad connection at a fuse in the fuse box, a bad connection in the plug at the alternator, a weak fusible link at the battery, or even an intermittent voltage regulator.

24v.....I wired in a seperate voltmeter to check on output. After idling for a few minutes the alternator output slowly climbs to 27.7 to 28.0. When not charging it drops to below 25 and that is when lights come on. Tried 2 differnet voltage regulators. Voltage regulator sits on top of alternator...external?

You say it's easy to get from China/SE Asia...24v as well?

Like these ones, this seller does the 24 volt version at the same price. Im not sure where you are or where he will post to,but Im sure other sellers will send overseas.I think any of the sellers on ebay will have access to 12v and 24v.There is still quite a few 24v japanese 4wds in oz
Obviously postage is not cheap, work on $20 per kg.

Seems this owner got one from OZ https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/586525-2h-vacuum-pump-configuration.html

But like Radd pointed out,it maybe something else,so you need to know for sure.
