Calling on all the 80 gurus. Friend of mine recently bought a 97 FZJ 80. Took it to ATR and the power brake booster went. It has 239K on it and he's trying to use this opportunity to upgrade if possible. What do you guys recommend? Any tips or tricks out there?

Thanks for any help!

I don't know if there are any upgrades, but definitely stick with a Toyota unit.

Hey guys. I'm the one who has the 80 and the booster went out. So far the truck is stock, but will eventually get a lift, 37s, steel bumpers, etc.... I was thinking of going to a Hydroboost system from a suburban. What do you guys think?

I do not own an 80. Are there brakes bad, swishy, do they not work well with 35's? I've always wanted to try some powerstop green pads and see if there is a difrence. But I'm a cheap ass!!

The brakes aren't really bad, they are adequate. I'm sure they'd be "okay" with 37s and a bunch of extra weight. But since I'm planning all that, and to be pulling a trailer on occasion, I figure this is a good time to improve braking if I can. From what I've been reading the stock vacuum boosters give about 800-900 lbs of fluid pressure to the calipers. A hydroboost system is 2200 lbs or more. The hydroboost systems from GM also push more brake fluid. In theory, this will stop the 80 must faster, and give much better clamping power.

I wonder if a unit from a newer tundra would be a upgrade. The FJ80 master cylinder is a upgrade for us mini truck guys. and the early taco and 4runners use calipers from a tundra to upgrade there stopping. I wonder what you could mix and match.

Actually look into a master from a Sequoia, Tundras up till 07 still had rear drum brakes so the valving may not be correct for the FJ80 where the Sequoia has rear disc like the FJ80.

I like the GM style retrofit idea, lots of work though.
I have read some threads where some people have retrofitted just a GM vacuum 1-ton or 3/4 ton brake booster and master cyl. The thread I originally tried to dig up on another forum has dead picture links, but if you look up Mossyrocks on here or pirate, his super 3rd gen build has the retrofit done.
