Would a 96' pass CA SMOG easily?

In March 2004 I bought a 96 with 100k miles and it passed CA smog without any problems. The smog readings/levels were well within the allowed range. I passed smog before doing any maintenance (plugs, wires, rotors, synthetic oil, transmission service, clean throttle, etc.).

Maybe. Maybe not.
Depends on how it's running. Assuming it's running fine, you're prolly okay.

Just before I sold my '94, although it had been recently tuned, it passed, but not by a far margin in some categories (this was about 2 1/2 years ago).

Just a few months ago, my '97 passed CA smog with readings well below all max allowed.

Are you buying or selling (based on your sig line, I assume you don't own the '96).

You shouldn't have any issues assuming your O2 sensors are good. Only time I failed one with the '94 was when a 'no longer going there' local Yota dealer botched up the O2 sensor replacement by not reconnecting the wiring. Once fixed she passed with flying colors.

All 95 up 80 series Cruisers are 50 states emission compliant. If the vehicle is mechanicaly sound you shoud be fine.

You mean my '94 is special & precious to CA? hehehe I know it is, but......

... and my 97 passed with very goods marks as well.

You don't say where you are located, but keep in mind that not all CA counties have the same smog requirements - in fact there are three different smog "zones" in the state, IIRC. Obviously, the test in the stricter counties is more difficult to pass (they require dyno testing, I believe, tho not up here in the NE corner so I'm not certain of the details...).

I do know that my sister coundn't get her 97 40th smogged here because her county of residence has a stricter test than we do.

Cheers, R -

Special indeed, just like the driver

I just double-checked and all 94's are also 50 states. 93 is the only year 1FZ that was either federal or California. The federal 93's do not have the EGR temp sensor.

To be on the safe side, run your cruiser kinda hard for 15-20 minutes prior to testing. You want to get that catalytic converter nice and hot!

Great advice by hoser. I've heard from several people that you have to get the catalytic converter nice and hot -- this takes about 20 minutes of driving. So, I got the smog test after driving to work (20 freeway miles from home).

Thanks for all the advice. I am in Chico, CA. I am looking at buying a '96 from Utah, but I am concerned with the SMOG. Sounds like it will be fine though. Thanks again.

My truck is from Nevada and it passed CA Smog just fine. Of course this is after I replaced the egr modulator and the egr vsv and the vacuum lines to the egr stuff. ::)

The other part is that once you have done this, don't shut the truck off while waiting to get is smogged. If it is going to be 20 minutes or so, tell the guy you will be back and want to go drive around.
