In the morning (or after it has sat for extended periods of time - hrs) my 96 makes a whining noise - not too loud - for a brief time when it first starts. It occurs, but does not seem to be related, just in the period right after it turns over and the RPM's are temporarily high. As soon as the RPM's drop to normal idle (maybe 2 seconds) - the whine is gone.

It doesn't happen if i have driven the truck within an hour or so and seems to be worse the colder it is.

I know that was probably a crappy description - but any hints would be appreciated.

hp,

Check your drive belts (tension not tight enough or cracked old rubber that does not catch well in cold weather - thus the initial slippage (whining)). Depending on the mileage, they may be dued already.

Do a search if you plan on tackling this job - dead easy & relatively cheap to do (approx. $20 bucks).

Frank.

Sorry I should have mentioned...all new belts put on by PO less than 4000 miles ago.

Are they Toyota belts? All others tend to whine. If they are Gates with the cogged belt they will whine a lot. Been there done that. Had to replace mine with Toyota OEM.

can also be an idler tensioner bearing, use one of though listening devices to pinpoint where the sound is coming from.

Yea, I get it too when its super cold out. My belts are about 5000mi old but they are goodyear belts from autozone. It sounds, from what I heard, to be belts whining and then they catch and its all better.

Are we talking like really short time after first starting--a few seconds? Sort of a zipping sound? If so, sounds like the oil running up thru the system.

Do you use OEM oil filters? They have an anti-drain-back vavle that keeps the oil from running back into the oil pan.

HP,

Make sure the belts are NOT loose and infact OEM Toyota belts (has Mitshubishi tag on it - and no ribs). It could be not tensioned or seated properly during installation.

Idler bearing could also be a cause but you only experience it during cold starts so I doubt it.

Cheers,
Frank.

I have that "ZIPPING" sound as well when it's cold out. I'm thinking it's the fan viscous coupler. From my last noise problem that was something I checked. The bearing seems a little loose. I did buy a new one as at that time I was grasping at straws for what turned out to be a dry bushing. I just haven't got around to putting it in.

If this seems a reasonable possibility to others I'll find some time to install it.

Same zipping sound when i start my 93 LC when its cold outside and not driven for days at a time. Especially when its below 32F its happened 2x...really short and brief then sounds normal.....but when its above freezing, no sound at all.

yeah that sounds like the same sound...thanks for all the input...i will check this out tomorrow. I am new to this board and have to say it is awsome...thanks again for all your help - and future help

Add my Name to the winner..ugh Loser list! :(
as my 96 has the same exact zipping whine sound at startup ONLY when it is cold out...and the colder it is out..the longer the zip/whine sound.

I have new TTToyoda belts on it..
I also had TTToyoda oil filters on it..

..it still makes the freaking sound. I am just expecting a big fireball to come flaming out of my hood one day :D...well, that would be a much cooler way for the engine to blow..than to spring a little puzzy $2K oil leak somewhere.

Is this sound a sort of "zinging" sound like a fishing reel playing out rapidly?

If that is the case I suspect that it is comming from the power steering pump and is probably a function of the extreme cold. in this instance it falls under the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" heading.

[glow=black,2,2] Personally , if you live in a cold climate half the year , as I do I would say this wine is an ice wine .... now if you were from down under I'd go with an Australian Shiraz :P

I too , though , have such a whine .. perhaps I'll check to make sure they are all OEM belts ... *learning something* -- continue ~[/glow]

CDan is right again....

PS pump....I've got the same deal on my 96 (maybe its a 96 thing again, dam superbowl special!) My pump actually has a slow, very slow leak to it (not sure if related).

Pray for warmer weather boys!

It you have never changed your PS fluid then suck out the old fluid, flush the system and then add a can of Lucas PS stop leak and new ATF. Then drive it for another 100K miles.

Well. I guess it takes someone frome cold Canada to give the answer. PS pump. Happens on almost every vehicle when it gets really cold out. Totally normal.
Cheers, its almost spring.
