'94 OBD1 cruiser with 210,000. Purchased from Cali - but it lives at 9,000 ft. in Colorado. Two years ago I had CEL - 71. Took a gamble on the EGR modulator and it fixed my CEL.
Recently did oil pump seal, front main seal, and front axle service. A week later and CEL comes on again. Code 71 again. Do some research and decide to try the EGR bypass to clear the code for now. So I put a paper clip in the temp sensor for the EGR and I loop my vacuum lines on the throttle body and the modulator.
Just drove it to go backpacking and after driving up and over a big pass, pulled into the next town to get gas and put it in park to wait in line, suddenly idle jumps up to 1400 RPM and stays there. Warm summer day and I am half full at this point. I get gas, start up, and it is back to running like normal. Drive to trailhead which includes 9 mile road that goes from dirt to CO 4wd low range 1st and 2nd gear type stuff. Get to the end of the road - no high idle - but now I smell fuel, drivers side front only. Pop the hood and hear a slight pressure / hissing near the charcoal canister.
On the trail for 2 nights, hike out, and decide to hook EGR stuff back up just in case it was related. Make it all the way home, no fuel smell, but of course CEL came back on at highway speed.
Questions:
1. Would an EGR bypass possibly mess with the fuel evap system, vacuum issues, etc? Are these issues not related?
2. Any ideas on the random high idle when going into park on a warm summer day?
3. Does the fact that this was originally a Cali emissions truck potentially affect the success of EGR bypass / elimination?
Just trying to figure out the next step to take with this truck. Was feeling great about having some oil leaks and front axle feeling sorted. Bummed I'm back to troubleshooting emissions stuff now.
I'll probably bypass EGR again - see if I can recreate any of the issues (high idle / fuel smell).
I'm pretty sure this is the original charcoal canister - I'll look into replacing canister / doing a refill.
Other thoughts?
Thanks
