Hi Everyone,

I took my 80 Series (94 with 158K) out on a backroads adventure in E. Washington this past week putting roughly 800 miles on it over a combo of street and off road trails) and I've noticed now a metallic, almost like its aluminum, sound that comes from in/around the tranny hump, under the hood, or transfer case area. It occurs only when increasing RPMs under acceleration in 1st Gear (auto trans), will die off at about 1800 RPMs and then will reappear under acceleration at about 26-2800 RPMs. Again, all under acceleration. Could this be a loose exhaust manifold? Ive been told possibly a valve job is necessary but it sounds almost aluminized. I have new cats, exhaust hangers and a new exhaust. The exhaust tubes are all original but recently inspected a few months ago. Any ideas to address or similar fixes or experiences would be a great help!

I'm guessing heat shields around the exhaust both under the hood above the manifolds as well as under the passenger side of the cab near the firewall.

This is where mine rattled. A 2-2.5" hose-clamp works like a charm

And fire the shop that said "you need a valve job to fix an underbody rattle/screech"

The exhaust mount just downstream of the spot the catalytic converters are can tear and the exhaust pipe can hit the driveshaft flange under acceleration. Check that mount. Look for fresh marks on the exhaust pipe there too.
